Doctor Strange’s New Defenders May Be Marvel’s Most Powerful Team Ever

A new team of Defenders is being assembled by Doctor Strange, and they may be Marvel’s most powerful team yet. First hinted at in Marvel Comics #1000, this new team will debut in Defenders #1, on sale August 11 in print and digital. The new Defenders team will take on some of Marvel’s biggest threats, including Galactus’ family and the oldest villain in Marvel history!

While not having quite the name recognition of the Avengers, the Defenders have a long history at Marvel. Doctor Strange brought the first incarnation of the team together in 1971’s Marvel Feature #1, and ever since then, Strange has usually been at the center of successive Defenders teams. First consisting of Strange, Namor, the Hulk and the Silver Surfer, the Defenders were billed as a “non-team,” consisting of heroes who tended to work alone and saw themselves as a temporary alliance at best. Over time, more heroes joined, and the Defenders became more of a traditional superhero team, but the original idea of individualistic heroes reluctantly working together is an irresistible one, and writer Al Ewing and artist Javier Rodriguez are now uniting to bring readers a new Defenders team which may be the most powerful Marvel history.

What gives this new Defenders team its edge is the diversity of its members’ power sets. Doctor Strange’s presence gives the team Marvel’s most skilled magic user, but that’s something the Defenders have had in the past. The same is true for the Silver Surfer, who wields the wildly versatile Power Cosmic. Next is Cloud, a living nebula with ties to older Defenders teams; Cloud’s powers are immense, capable of manipulating matter and energy as well as interstellar travel. Red Harpy, the former Betsy Ross, gives this new Defenders team a massive boost in raw physical strength – a Hulk-level hero who has even out-muscled Captain Marvel. Rounding out the team is the mysterious Masked Raider, whose Eternity Mask (made from a fragment of the cosmic entity Eternity) gives its user power equal to their opponent – in essence leveling the playing field against any enemy, from the Green Goblin to Thanos.

It is a good thing this new Defenders team is as well-rounded as it is, since they will be taking on some truly cosmic-level threats. Galactus alone is a big enough problem, and no doubt his mother will cause massive headaches for the universe. Likewise, Marvel’s oldest villain, whose identity is still undisclosed but who may be an entire former reality given form, will most certainly be a universal threat as well, with the issue’s summary describing the Defenders as a team assembled for when “existence itself faces extraordinary threats.”

Problems like this require powers far beyond the scope of most Marvel teams, but this new incarnation of the Defenders seems equipped to deal with them. The team has a brute strength powerhouse in Red Harpy, unprecedented energy output in Silver Surfer and Cloud, the ability to bend the rules of reality in Doctor Strange, and a wildcard with seemingly no upper power limit in the Masked Raider. Doctor Strange’s new Defenders team seems set to be the most powerful in Marvel history, with characters capable of manipulating space and time and leveling city blocks – unfortunately, it seems the famous ‘non-team’ will also encounter plenty of threats who boast the same incredible power.
