Doctor Who 10 Actors Who Played Multiple Roles

Since Doctor Who returned in 2005, several actors have portrayed the regenerating main character of The Doctor. And while there are many recurring characters in the show, most episodes also feature guest characters.

The show is known for casting unexpected celebrities, such as Catherine Tate and Matt Lucas, and also casting relatively unknown actors, like Matt Smith and Andrew Garfield, who have gone on to be huge stars. There are some actors that simply can’t keep away from the show and over 12 seasons, and inevitably, a few have played several different roles.

10 Eve Myles (Gwyneth & Gwen Cooper)

Eve Myles debuted on Doctor Who all the way back in the season 1 episode, The Unquiet Dead, as Gwyneth. Later, she went on to play Gwen in the spin-off, Torchwood. The character of Gwen actually crossed over to the main show for the final two episodes of season 4.

The Doctor and Rose actually remarked on the similarities between Gwyneth and Gwen when they saw the latter over the Subwave network. Although Gwen is certainly the character Myles will be remembered for on the show, it was fun to hear that there was an ancestral connection between her two characters.

9 Adjoa Andoh (Sister Jatt & Francine Jones)

Adjoa Andoh is most known in the Doctor Who universe for playing Martha’s overbearing mother, Francine. But she had actually appeared on the show before, though as a very different character.

In the season 2 episode, New Earth, Andoh was unrecognizable as one of the cat nuns, Sister Jatt. Many fans may not have known this was the same actress, considering she was wearing heavy prosthetics in her first appearance. Neither of Andoh’s characters was particularly likable, but her first role was certainly the most villainous of the pair.

8 Freema Agyeman (Adeola Oshodi & Martha Jones)

Freema Agyeman had the huge responsibility of becoming the second permanent companion in “New Who.” Martha was often overlooked by The Doctor and is often underrated by the fans.

One of the most nerve-racking Doctor Who scenes was when The Doctor and Rose were forced apart and Agyeman actually appeared in these episodes. In the finale of season 2, she played Torchwood employee Adeola, who was later revealed to be Martha’s cousin. While Ageyman’s first role on the show was much smaller, it tied in nicely as part of Martha’s backstory.

7 Peter Capaldi (Caecilius, John Frobisher & The Twelfth Doctor)

Peter Capaldi played the Twelfth incarnation of The Doctor, but he had appeared in the Whoniverse twice prior to this. In season 4 of Doctor Who, he played Caecilius, whose family was saved by The Doctor, and in season 3 of Torchwood, he played the ill-fated Frobisher.

It was referenced during Capaldi’s run as The Doctor that he’d “chosen” his face to remind him to save people, linking back to his earlier appearance as Caecilius. While his original role was minor, it ended up playing an important part in the Twelfth Doctor’s journey. Capaldi will always be remembered for his stellar performance as The Doctor, but his tragic arc as Frobisher, whilst short, is also highly memorable.

6 Mark Gatiss (Professor Lazarus, Danny Boy, Gantok & The Captain)

Mark Gatiss has a long history with Doctor Who, having written nine episodes of the show and also acting in five episodes. Having played four different roles, Gatiss made history when he wrote Victory of the Daleks and also appeared in the episode as Danny Boy.

Gatiss’ first role was as the main antagonist of The Lazarus Experiment, while he later played the heroic Captain in The Twelfth Doctor’s final story. The Captain was actually revealed as a relative of Classic Who character, The Brigadier, which ended The Twelfth Doctor’s run on a touching note. Gatiss has portrayed a variety of roles on the show, but The Captain’s ties to Classic Who and the heartwarming armistice scenes probably make this his most memorable character.

5 Jessica Hynes (Joan Redfern & Verity Newman)

Jessica Hynes starred in one of the best two-part Doctor Who stories as nurse Joan Redfern. Joan fell in love with the newly changed human Doctor and was left heartbroken when he became a Timelord again.

When the Tenth Doctor was regenerating, he visited many of his past companions, but there was an unexpected person amongst them. Hynes had a cameo here as Verity Newman, the great-granddaughter of her previous character, who had written a book about her relative’s time with The Doctor. It was touching to see Hynes back here, showing that Joan’s time with The Doctor really had been important to him.

4 Chipo Chung (Chantho & The Fortune Teller)

Chipo Chung first appeared on the show as the companion of the disguised Master in Utopia. Chantho met a particularly grisly end at the hands of The Master, but not before she shot him and forced him to regenerate.

Chung appeared in the following season, this time with fewer prosthetics, as The Fortune Teller who caused Donna to change the course of history. Both of her roles were quite small, but she went from playing a lovable character to a more villainous one. Despite the small amount of screen time she got, both of Chung’s characters caused huge plot developments.

3 Vinette Robinson (Abi Lerner & Rosa Parks)

Vinette Robinson played the famous historic figure, Rosa Parks, in one of the best standalone Doctor Who episodes for casual fans. Robinson gave an outstanding performance in the episode and is one of the most memorable guest stars of the Chibnall era.

However, fans may not remember that Robinson featured in the episode 42 years earlier, as one of the crew members. Her first role was very inconsequential and the episode as a whole is fairly forgettable. Robinson’s role as Rosa Parks, though, was powerful and heartbreaking and will likely go down as one of the best guest performances in the show’s history.

2 David Bradley (Solomon & The First Doctor)

David Bradley faced off against The Eleventh Doctor as the evil Solomon in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. The role was very minor and Bradley seemed wasted in the role, however, he was given the chance to shine when he reappeared later on.

Bradley returned in The Twelfth Doctor’s final episode as a recast version of The First Doctor. While the decision to recast a Doctor was divisive, it was exciting to see the current Doctor at the time interact with the very first. Although Bradley was somewhat wasted in his first role on the show, he was certainly given much more to work with the second time around.

1 Karen Gillan (Soothsayer & Amy Pond)

When Karen Gillan appeared as an unnamed soothsayer in a season 4 episode, fans couldn’t have predicted she’d become the companion in the following season. Amy was The Eleventh Doctor’s true companion and played a huge role in his era.

Gillan was very much in the background during her first appearance and most fans had probably forgotten about it. However, she went on to become one of Doctor Who’s main stars. Amy became The Doctor’s best friend during her time in TARDIS and was the mother of another companion and wife to another. Gillan may have begun her time on the show in a background role, but her time as Amy Pond will go down in history.
