Actor and pop star Olly Alexander has ruled himself out of the race to play the 14th Doctor on Doctor Who, but has named his co-star Omari Douglas as his choice for the job. The 31-year-old actor rose to fame as the frontman of pop duo Years and Years, before wowing audiences with his leading role in 2021’s standout miniseries It’s A Sin. In the series, created by former Doctor Who show-runner Russell T. Davies, Alexander’s role as aspiring gay actor Ritchie Tozer took critics and audiences by storm.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that current Doctor Who leading lady Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall would both be leaving the programme at the end of next year. Davies soon announced he would be taking over the show in a move that thrilled fans of his so-called Doctor Who ‘Golden Age’ between 2005 and 2010. With Whittaker’s departure, the media speculation began once more around who would be the next prestigious Time Lord to lead the show. Alexander’s breakthrough performance, and his relationship with Davies, saw him instantly top bookies’ lists as the most likely candidate for the next Doctor Who.

Now, according to BlueClaw, Alexander has seemingly ruled himself out of the speculative race. Telling the PA New agency “I’m definitely not going to be the Doctor,” the actor and singer quashed months of rumors. The star went on to say that “[Russell’s Doctor is] going to be so amazing.” Confirming his favorite choice for the next Time Lord, Alexander is “definitely backing” one of his It’s A Sin co-stars, Omari Douglas. The actor’s comments and his support of friend and colleague will certainly have an effect on the odds and speculation, and will likely push Douglas further up the rankings.

Douglas, 27, was another breakout star of the Channel 4 drama set during the AIDS crisis, and played brave gay rebel Roscoe Babatunde. Currently, the actor is starring opposite Doctor Who-alum Russell Tovey in the theatre play Constellations, where he is receiving rave reviews. Following the conclusion of Chibnall and Whittaker’s last full series (the six-part, well-received adventure Doctor Who: Flux), the current era of Doctor Who moves one step closer to its November 2022 terminus. Before that though, the 13th Doctor has a New Years Day reunion with the Daleks up her sleeve in a Doctor Who special episode Eve of The Daleks.

Alexander may say he’s “definitely” not playing the 14th Doctor, but for now he is still top of the list in fans’ minds. Douglas, who is set to appear in Beatles biopic Midas Man alongside Emily Watson and Eddie Marsan, is currently considered on the shortlist to play the next Doctor after Whittaker alongside many other British stars. However, this new show of support from Alexander may bump up his chances. The 14th Doctor will finally be revealed at some point between now and 2023, and with Davies set to once again helm the show he brought back to life, fans will be on tenterhooks waiting to see who he picks to lead his long-awaited return to Doctor Who.
