Doctor Who The One Thing Chris Chibnall Must Do In Season 13

Chris Chibnall’s tenure as Doctor Who showrunner has been widely criticized, but with his time at the helm coming to an end, there’s one thing he must do in season 13 to redeem his era. Starting in 2018, Chibnall took the reins from the creator of the BBC’s Sherlock, Steven Moffat. After announcing the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor, the aging series looked to be in for a fresh start. Three years later it’s been announced that Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker are both making their exit, and the original showrunner of the revived series, Russell T Davies, is set to take back the wheel in 2023.

While loved by some, Chibnall’s vision for Doctor Who has received major criticism from the show’s fanbase and television audience at large. Whether it was due to the uneven quality of the writing or Chibnall’s controversial changes to Doctor Who’s canon, the last two seasons have largely been viewed as a step back for the series. With Chibnall leaving Doctor Who after season 13 (as well as a series of specials in 2022), that only gives him one season and some change to really make an impact and finish out his tenure on a high note.

Chibnall must show his vision for who the Thirteenth Doctor is and what makes her incarnation of the Doctor special. While many viewers are all too eager to see a new writer running Doctor Who, most are still sad to see Thirteen go. There is a genuine love for Whittaker as a performer and a strong desire to see her Doctor succeed. Despite that affection, Thirteen’s personality has taken a back seat in her run thus far, leaving audiences with only a vague and inconsistent notion of Chibnall’s vision of who the Doctor is. More than anything, Thirteen needs one big moment to define this incarnation of The Doctor.

It’s not without precedent. Steven Moffat was a controversial showrunner in his own right. Matt Smith’s era as the Eleventh Doctor wasn’t without its blemishes, but few will forget the moment in the episode “The Eleventh Hour” when Eleven said to a legion of invading aliens, “Basically, run.” Similarly, no one will forget the Ninth Doctor’s declaration that, “Just this once, everybody lives!” from “The Doctor Dances.” Whether it’s Eleven’s flamboyant pluck or Nine’s wounded optimism, these moments show what’s unique about that incarnation of The Doctor. As of yet, Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor has nothing like this. Thirteen needs her version of this moment, a single iconic scene that can define her.

If Chibnall’s going to leave a lasting sense of Thirteen’s personality, he has to turn away from the show’s mythology and focus on her as a character. Doctor Who’s Timeless Child retcon has thrown a monkey-wrench in the show’s overall canon, but the actual significance to Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor has been unclear. The particulars of her mysterious background might be intriguing on the surface, but those details feel hollow without a clear meaning for the Doctor herself. Whittaker has brought a playful quirkiness to the role, but she hasn’t had a chance to reveal anything meaningful about the Doctor’s interior life. Chibnall needs to resist the urge to become even further entangled in the show’s lore and instead give Whittaker a chance to portray the personal journey at the center of the show.

Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who is always going to be viewed with mixed feelings, but he still has a chance to leave one solid season behind. Viewers want to love Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, and while they may never change their minds about the Timeless Child, the show is more than just that one reveal. If Chibnall can change course and give her the material she needs to succeed, there’s still time for the Thirteenth Doctor herself to become the best part of his legacy.
