Doctor Who Vinder & Bel Are The Doctors Real Parents Theory Explained

Doctor Who: Flux delved further into the backstory of the enigmatic Vinder and his long-lost partner Bel, who some are theorizing could be the Doctor’s parents. Though we’re still learning more about the Doctor’s history and her identity as the Timeless Child, Bel and Vinder, who are seemingly separated by both time and space, were revealed to be expecting a child at the end of Flux’s third episode. Perhaps they could be the Doctor’s, or rather the Timeless Child’s birth parents, stuck out of time.

By the end of Doctor Who’s 12th season, we learned that the Doctor was actually the Timeless Child, a being discovered by an ancient Gallifreyan named Tecteun underneath a mysterious gateway to another dimension. The season’s titular Flux seems to have the ability to splice different dimensions and worlds together, as episode 3 showed the Doctor and her current companions Yaz, Dan, and Commander Vinder thrust throughout altered versions of their own time streams. We also meet Bel, a survivor of the Flux, desperate to reunite with Vinder, saying that love is her mission as she searches for her lost partner through the devastation of the Flux.

In the final moments of episode 3, Bel was revealed to be pregnant with Vinder’s child, leading some to speculate that Bel and Vinder could be the mysterious parents of the Timeless Child, and therefore the Doctor herself. Since both Vinder and Bel have now been transported to different planets (and perhaps times) by the Flux, it’s possible Bel and Vinder (potentially a time traveler himself) are both actually from the ancient past, even the Doctor’s personal past. Furthermore, perhaps Vinder and Bel’s separation from one another could hint at the reason why the Timeless Child was eventually discovered in the enigmatic dimensional gateway by Tecteun.

As victims of the Flux, it’s difficult to place Vinder and Bel in one particular time or place. Vinder’s history has been teased, alluding to a connection to an enigmatic organization run by the Grand Serpent. Though it’s not entirely clear yet, some have speculated that Vinder could perhaps be a time traveler himself, or even a part of the show’s mysterious Division, mainly since Vinder knows what the TARDIS is. With a history of potential time travel, and now as the victim of the Flux himself, it stands to reason that Vinder could be from the long-forgotten past and fathered his child with Bel thousands and thousands of years ago, making it possible for him to be the Doctor’s father.

Additionally, in following Bel’s quest to reunite with Vinder, Bel overcame a variety of deadly obstacles, including Daleks and Cybermen, as well as the destruction of her and Vinder’s home planet. Her journey back to Vinder has been rife with peril, suggesting that perhaps her and Vinder’s story may not come to a happy conclusion. Perhaps Flux is foreshadowing Vinder and Bel’s demises, explaining why their child may have been abandoned—could their abandoned child become the Timeless Child, turning up in an interdimensional gateway near Gallifrey?

Flux’s non-sequential episode 3 left viewers halfway through unraveling the season’s central mystery. Now, with the introduction of Bel as Vinder’s romantic counterpoint, and the tease of their unborn child, the Flux has added another mystery to its dimensional apocalypse. Regardless of the answer, Doctor Who: Flux has clearly teased an intriguing mystery having to do with the Doctor, Vinder and Bel, and their unborn child.
