The following contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, now in theaters.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has already broken box office records worldwide within days of its release. The long-awaited sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange centers around Master of the Mystic Arts Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he struggles to protect young America Chavez from a corrupt Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Chavez can travel the multiverse — a skill she hasn’t yet honed — and after reading the Darkhold, Marvel’s Book of the Damned, Wanda tries to take Chavez’s power for her own in an attempt to reach a reality where she can finally be reunited with her children. Directed by Sam Raimi, Multiverse of Madness is a wild ride from start to finish, spanning several realities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and featuring star-studded cameos, but some Marvel fans argue that the film is packed with too much content, sacrificing character development.

Like Avengers: Endgame, Multiverse of Madness definitely requires some background knowledge beforehand, with Marvel head Kevin Feige telling fans to take note of the events of WandaVision, Loki and What If…? to fully appreciate the context of the film. All of these are part of Marvel’s lineup of television shows through a partnership with Disney+, and many Marvel fans have hailed these series as a unique way for comic fans to get their superhero fix while simultaneously developing beloved MCU heroes even further. WandaVision was a prime example of this, serving as partly an origin story for Wanda but also as a continuation of her arc following the tragic loss of Vision in Infinity War. WandaVision was a beautiful example of one’s journey through grief yet also a tale of self-discovery, ending with Wanda fully realizing her destiny as the fabled Scarlet Witch and coming into possession of the Darkhold.

WandaVision also dangerously peeked behind the curtain at the true extent of Wanda’s power after she essentially enslaved an entire town to make them characters in her real-life sitcom starring her, Vision and their two children. Ultimately, Wanda was forced to give up the illusion she’d created for herself in the Hex, realizing that despite having everything she wanted, it wasn’t fair to control the lives of others for her own gain. The ending of the show was a solid conclusion of Wanda coming to terms with her grief, seemingly moving on from the town of Westview in favor of isolating herself away from others until she could fully control her chaos magic. But the post-credits scene showed a quick clip of Wanda’s astral form reading the Darkhold and hearing the voices of her children crying out to her from a different reality.

This is where Multiverse of Madness picks up. It had long been speculated that Wanda would be playing the villain in this movie, which was surprising to fans considering her resolution after WandaVision. Right off the bat in Multiverse of Madness, Wanda is evil and desperate to reach her children by whatever means necessary — even if it means killing a young girl in the process. This is a sharp and drastic change from the last time fans saw her at the end of WandaVision, and the juxtaposition is kind of jarring. Raimi tries to write it off by utilizing a few lines of dialogue that state whoever reads the Darkhold becomes corrupted, even if it’s just one time. Perhaps Wanda has been logging countless hours studying the Darkhold between the events of WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness, and this is what led to her dramatic change in attitude.

Wanda is absolutely brutal in Multiverse of Madness, as she makes quick work of the multiple Strange variants, the sorcerors at Kamar-Taj, and even the Illuminati. On one hand, it’s exciting for Scarlet Witch fans to see Wanda truly unleash the extent of her chaos magic, but it also almost feels too out of place for her character. Yes, WandaVision showed that she was willing to do anything to have her family, but the show’s resolution seemed to reveal that Wanda had accepted her reality and would be able to now close this chapter and move on. To see essentially all of her character development from WandaVision thrown out the window in Multiverse of Madness felt like watching two completely different versions of the character.

Regardless of whether Wanda is a hero or a villain, there’s little argument that she is one of the most powerful members of the MCU right now. Though the ending of Multiverse of Madness seemingly spelled the end for the Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen herself has confirmed that there may still be more to see from Wanda. Whether it’s a solo movie or another supporting appearance like in Multiverse of Madness, hopefully, Wanda will be in a better place emotionally and mentally. Seeing a character truly lose everything has built a loyal and dedicated fanbase for the Scarlet Witch, who only want to see her happy and successful. While WandaVision seemed to be a step in that direction, Multiverse of Madness turned Wanda Maximoff’s character upside down yet again.

To see a completely different Wanda, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.
