Captain America has been a symbol of comic book iconography for a very long time, and his appearance in the MCU has only bolstered his popularity. Now that Cap’s story has finally wrapped up, it’s time to turn attention back to the comics, where the character is still going strong.
A number of talented artists – both hobbyists and professionals – have been churning out unbelievable works based on the character, and the upcoming pieces are 10 of the coolest the internet has to offer. These are some of the most unique and inspiring takes on the character that someone is likely to ever see.
10 Comic Cap
This excellent piece is a classic looking take on the Marvel art style of the late ’90s and early 2000s, and it captures the same sense of rhythm and movement of a dynamic comic book panel. The piece was sketched by Ryan Stegman and colored by Jeremiah Skipper from DC Comics, and it’s a fantastic combination.
The colors really make the piece pop, especially on Cap’s shield which reflects a light source on the bottom right. A very nice touch, all around.
9 Medieval Cap
The Durrrrian did an entire series featuring medieval interpretations of Marvel superheroes, and this Captain America shot is one of the best. The mixture of knight’s armor, flowing red cape, and the signature shield leap right off the screen.
The blue and red accents are an especially nice touch, suggesting that the armor was an afterthought to add to his existing costume. The blue-tinted eye holes add a bit more dramatic flair to the shot. The abstract brush strokes also give this piece a very timeless and classy feel.
8 Civil War Cap
The cover of Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War (2006) #1 is revisited with this piece colored by SeanE. It’s an impressively accurate recoloring of an official art piece depicting the feud between Cap and Tony Stark.
In the scenario, Cap seems to have taken quite a few knocks, as well. His costume is torn in several places, he’s bleeding from the lip, and his grueling expression suggests a prolonged slugfest between two relatively evenly-matched opponents. It is a great recreation of a classic cover.
7 Winter Soldier Cap
Symbolism is heavy on this piece, as is a sense of motion. It’s a great take on the 2014 Winter Soldier film from Marvel’s MCU, with a comic book interpretation of Cap standing unmasked and alone against the backdrop of a gigantic arm and the wreckage of a S.H.I.E.L.D. carrier.
The piece says a lot, and there’s plenty of detail that makes it come to life. The lighting accents are an especially nice touch here, as is Cap’s tattered form and banged up shield. Big props to ChaoyuanXu for this one.
6 Steampunk Cap
Eric Yan gave Cap quite a steampunk retrofit with this fan art piece that looks like it came straight out of World of Warcraft. The inventive use of vintage materials (including goggles) is a very nice nod to steampunk aficionados, as are the armor-plated legs and shoulder pauldron.
Cap’s shield is understated as well, which adds to the classic feel of this piece. It’s simple, straightforward, and heavily detailed. Yan deserves a lot of praise for his beautiful use of shading and toning on top of the already excellent piece.
5 War Cap
Yutaka Li created this bold interpretation of Captain America in a close-up shot that features his shield as the main focus for the eye. The fiery background and burning embers suggest Cap is walking away from a massive explosion or a climactic battle with a victory in hand.
The shading is excellent on this piece, and the embossed feel of the shield adds dramatic flair to the visuals. This could easily be framed and hung on a geek den wall to make friends green with envy.
4 Vintage Cap
Felipe Massafera is one seriously talented illustrator, and his work shines through here with this superb shot of Captain America that looks like it was ripped right out of a 1940s magazine. Indeed, the center crease suggests as much, giving this piece a traditional paper feel in digital form.
The nostalgia runs high thanks to the bold and iconic wartime iconography, including parachuting soldiers dropping in behind enemy lines. Cap seems to have no trouble diving out on his own, however. It could be a nod to the beginning act of The Winter Soldier, but either way, it’s dynamite.
3 Color Cap
For something a bit more punchy and dramatic, this super-colorful take on Captain America is hard to beat. The sharp, edgy lines are loaded with detail, and punctuate the screen with perfect clarity. Even more striking are the colors which consist of bright, beautiful blues and understated reds with flecks of yellow to highlight kinetics.
This piece is the kind that makes fans yearn for a full comic book done in this very style, start to finish. David Thor Fjalarsson deserves top marks for knocking this one straight out of the ballpark and into the adjacent parking lot.
2 Uncle Cap
Far more young men would have been willing to enlist if Captain America were the guy on the poster, rather than grouchy looking Uncle Sam! Cap’s heroic pose is both reassuring and motivating at the same time.
ARmydesigner took the best elements of classic U.S. Army recruitment posters and did something cool and inventive with it. The weathered aesthetic gives it a classy feel, and the painted look of Cap is a nice touch that really sells the whole idea that this could have been a 1940s poster.
1 Venom Cap
And now for something completely different, here is Duh Dude’s brilliant interpretation of Captain America infused with the Venom symbiote. It’s a throwback to the glory days of Venom’s early 1990s comic book appearances, boasting the exact same art style and coloring.
The only downside to this piece is the mental imagery of Captain America devouring the brains of his defeated foes whilst shouting “Avengers, assemble!” Otherwise, it’s one of the most remarkable and unique takes on Captain America within the fan art community!
