The first teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel film, Downton Abbey: A New Era has now been released. The widely popular and critically acclaimed television series originally aired in the UK on ITV for 6 seasons, before eventually reaching United States audiences on PBS. The series observed the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic staff that served them at the country estate of Downton Abbey during the early 1900s. Following the show’s conclusion, a feature film of the same name was released in 2019, with A New Era being announced two years later.

Now, Focus Features has released the first teaser trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era, which begins with an admission by Maggie Smith’s Violet Crawley, in which she mentions meeting a man many years ago, and now, has come in possession of a villa in the South of France. Referring to the film as “the grandest escape of the year,” it goes on to feature footage of this potential new setting, as well as Tom Branson’s second wedding, and offers fans a look at some its returning cast, including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, and Jim Carter. The trailer ends with Violet Crawly dismissing herself, stating: “And with that, I will say goodnight and leave you to discuss my mysterious past.” Check out the full teaser trailer below:

The sequel is being directed by BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Simon Curtis, and written and produced by Julian Fellowes, the creator behind its original series.
