Dawson Leery may have been a teen heartthrob in the ’90s, but the Dawson’s Creek protagonist would make 2020 audiences groan.

Classic teen drama Dawson’s Creek revolves around Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), his best friend/soulmate Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) and whether or not they’re meant to be together. Their group of friends take up a lot of screen time, too, but for the most part, all six seasons are leading up to the question of whether it’s real love for these two childhood pals.
Dawson is a tricky character because he’s emotional, sensitive, and dramatic, but he can also be super loyal and kind. However, a lot of his actions and behaviors would seem really weird today. Here are 10 things about Dawson that would never fly in 2020.
10 Treats Jen Like She Has To Be A Perfect Girlfriend From A Movie
In the first season of Dawson’s Creek, Dawson becomes obsessed with Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams), and she becomes dream girl. But he treats her like she has to be a perfect girlfriend from all of the movies that he loves, which is pretty unfair.
When Dawson likes someone, he can be a bit creepy because he acts overly nice and like he can’t help them enough. It’s off-putting and if he acted like that today, people would tell him to take things down a couple notches.
9 Insults The Film Teacher And Begs Him To Take A Class
Also in season 1, Dawson becomes obsessed with the idea of taking a film class at Capeside High, even though he’s too young. He begs the teacher to let him take the class and then insults him by saying that it’s a stupid idea without realizing that it was the teacher’s decision.
In the real world, a teacher would simply tell a student that it’s not possible for him to take the class because he has to wait his turn. It’s unrealistic for the teacher to let Dawson audit without participating or getting graded. And it wouldn’t fly today for Dawson to be so pushy and aggressive with a teacher, who is an authority figure.
8 Acts Entitled And Like He Knows More Than Any Adult (Or Classmate)
Is it possible for Dawson Leery to by anything other than entitled? It definitely seem likely.
Dawson always acts like he knows more than any adult or classmate. Whether he’s complaining about the other entries at a student film festival because he thinks that his movie is obviously better or he’s annoyed that Jen has dated other people, he constantly has a bad attitude. Today, someone would tell him that he’s not going to get anywhere in life by behaving this way.
7 Dates Pacey’s 21-Year-Old Sister While Still In High School
When Dawson and Pacey’s older sister Gretchen Witter (Sascha Alexander) date, no one really focuses on their age difference. Sure, it’s not massive, but the fact that he dates a 21-year-old while he’s still in high school isn’t really the best thing ever.
It doesn’t seem like this would fly today as people are more aware of age gaps and what is considered appropriate in a relationship. At the very least, there would be more of a discussion about it.
6 Quits College Immediately Then Expects His Life In Boston To Work Out ASAP
It’s pretty strange when Dawson is so psyched to go away for film school yet drops out so quickly. When he quits college, he moves to Boston and then seems shocked that the real world isn’t that kind to him.
Today, it wouldn’t fly for Dawson to expect his adult life to work out ASAP. Everyone has to pay their dues and it takes a while for them to reach their dream career status. Today, more people would tell Dawson to calm down and work hard.
5 Rude To A Film Critic Who Is About To Watch His Movie
In the season 5 episode “Cigarette Burns,” Dawson insults Amy Lloyd (Meredith Salenger), a film critic who is literally there to watch the movie that he and Oliver (Jordan Bridges) made. The film screening is a total disaster as Dawson tells Amy that she has bad taste in movies and he’s incredibly rude to her. It’s hard to imagine why anyone would act like this.
To make things even worse, Dawson sleeps with her, which is unprofessional and inappropriate. He would never do that today. Modern Dawson would be so grateful to have a critic review his movie that he would be polite the entire time.
4 Asks Joey If She Slept With Pacey
While it’s strange and awkward that Joey says no when Dawson asks her if she slept with Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), it’s really awful that Dawson broached the subject in the first place.
This wouldn’t fly today because it’s not really his business. Dawson knows that he and Joey have a tough history and he should respect that his two friends have a relationship that doesn’t involve him.
3 Tells A Director He Makes The Worst Films… On Day One Of Working With Him
When Dawson goes to USC, it’s supposed to be a dream come true. Instead, on day one, he tells a director that he makes the worst films. Of course, this director tells Dawson that he can’t work for him anymore, which isn’t exactly surprising.
The director is Todd Car (Hal Ozsan), who does end up hiring Dawson again in the future. But today, this would never fly. If someone insulted a colleague like this, they would never work for them again, and it would definitely affect their career.
2 Dates An Actress While Working On A Movie
In the sixth season, Dawson is hired to work on a horror movie with Todd, and he starts sleeping with Natasha Kelly (Bianca Kajlich). This is a bit inappropriate since she’s an actress starring in the film. Things get complicated when she’s upset that Dawson slept with Joey and wants him off the set, which Todd obliges.
Today, this would never fly as people have to be careful about dating in the workplace, and it’s often best to separate the professional and personal.
1 Thinks It’s No Big Deal For Him And Joey To Sleep In The Same Bed
In the pilot episode of Dawson’s Creek, Joey lets Dawson know that she’s not sure that she should sleep over anymore. After all, they sleep in his bed together, and now that they’re in high school and there are raging hormones everywhere, it seems like a bad idea.
Dawson convinces her that it’s no big deal… but this definitely wouldn’t fly today. One of their parents would have a problem with it and it wouldn’t seem as normal as the show presents it.
