DokeV Every Monster Shown In The Game Awards Music Video

DokeV is an upcoming creature collector game by the Pearl Abyss game studio, and in the 2021 Game Awards presentation, it showcased a new music video that featured some of the monsters that players can expect. Their names, any classification about them, and how they will aid players in or out of combat are all up in the air for now. Although information on the game, and especially the creatures in it, is sparse, the music video does offer a small amount of information about them, at least on the surface level.

The trailers released by Pearl Abyss have so far focused on traversal and gameplay, however, the game’s wiki does offer some details on the monsters. According to the wiki, these creatures are known as Dokebi, and they gain power from dreams. The open-world game DokeV incorporates Korean culture in both its trailers and the new music video, so influences from Korean theology and mythology are not out of the question. The Dokebi are invisible and require special glasses in order to be seen, and can be stored inside of small chips. The 2021 Game Awards music video showed several of the monsters, however, no details on them were given. So far, DokeV portrays itself as a high-energy, high-octane cross between Yokai Watch, Pokémon, and Sunset Overdrive. What the Dokebi in it will be like, and how big of a part they will play, remains to be seen, but they look promising so far.

The 2021 Game Awards music video showed several of the monsters that players can expect from DokeV. Some look like duo-colored cats with hats, others pink anteaters, and still more bears with eye patches. From DokeV’s reveal trailer, the joyful gameplay chaos that the game promises mostly relates to either fighting them or utilizing the game’s traversal options. The Dokebi are mostly shown dancing on the video’s stage along with several human characters, but after the video is done, there is a short scene that features some of them hiding in what appears to be a temple from what may be the player character, judging by their expanding hammer that has been shown in past trailers. Whether this is merely a humorous skit or a sample of what fans can expect to see in the game is uncertain.

All Of DokeV’s Monsters On-Stage In Their Music Video

Near the end of the music video, many of DokeV’s creatures are shown dancing on a stage along with several humans. They all appear from bursts of multicolored light, which is consistent with what has been shown of them in past trailers so far. News and updates on DokeV’s creatures is few and far between, but hopefully more will come as the game gets closer to release. From the video and other reveals, most of them appear to be anthropomorphic bipedal creatures, some with clothing like hats, pants, and even capes. Many of them resemble animals, but some also have plant-like or artificial features, such as one with a clock for a head.

The list of Dokebi front and center on the stage includes a vertically split black and white cat, a pink anteater, an unidentified humanoid with a clock for a head, a blue-and-green lizard, a white-furred creature with a red face, a white dog with a blue cape, a rotund red-skinned creature that resembles an apple wearing black shorts, another rotund creature with brown and white fur and a plant stalk sticking out of its head, and a humanoid with a large puff of white hair on its head and a blue suit. All of them came alongside the Game Awards 2021’s big announcements & game reveals.

Further in the back are a white bear with an eye patch and boxing gloves, what appears to be a hedgehog with grass for quills and a red nose, a blue and white shark-like creature, a snowman with a scarf and mittens, an unidentified green and black creature, a humanoid with a round red head and yellow hair, a blue angler fish, and a brown bull. There are quite a few Dokebi on the stage, more than it might at first appear, and all of them are dancing out along with their human counterparts. Many of these have appeared in previous trailers, though there are some new faces as well.

The mysterious Dokebi that players will be able to collect and battle in DokeV are light on details so far, but some inferences can be made from the music video, past trailers, and other available information. Unlike Pokémon, it promises truly open-world gameplay, which gives the Dokebi more freedom to move and players more options for finding and chasing them. The fact that they wear clothes and have some artificial features implies that they won’t just be run-of-the-mill animal-like creatures like the Pocket Monsters of the Pokémon series. They seem to have some form of intelligence, and their interference with humans’ everyday lives makes them sound more akin to the Yokai of Yokai Watch.

The Dokebi In The Music Video’s Temple

The most-watched game of The Game Awards might not be DokeV, but that doesn’t mean that the music video doesn’t have its own details to unpack. Since several human characters appear in the video and the trailers, it’s possible that DokeV will have many humans who collect and battle Dokebi. The implications of the temple scene may be unclear, but if it’s taken seriously, then it paints a picture of a world rather less like the fun, high-energy experience that DokeV’s music video and trailers have portrayed. If nothing else, it may be that there’s more tonal variety in the game than previously thought. Humans hunting Dokebi could become a major theme and the game’s main source of plot. In that respect, it takes on themes of the Digimon series, particularly the latest game entry, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory. DokeV could offer players a deep story, tough choices, and a touching narrative if it chooses to go in this direction.
