Dragon Ball FighterZ What You Need to Know About Ultra Instinct Goku

For FighterZ Pass owners, Ultra Instinct Goku finally dropped on May 20th for Dragon Ball FighterZ. This latest addition is the sixth Goku character on the roster, but it would be a mistake to regard Ultra Instinct Goku as a mere palette swap.

This particular form of “Ultra Instinct” is the completed version that first premiered in episode 129 of Dragon Ball Super when Goku clashed with Jiren. In this Autonomous Ultra Instinct state, Goku gained an incredible boost to his power, speed, and ki control, as well as the ability to defend and counterattack against anything without consciously thinking it. In-game, Goku showcases many of his techniques in the form of many unique special moves and normals.

Notable Attributes and Normals

Since Ultra Instinct is considered one of the most powerful transformations in the Dragon Ball universe, it’s only fair that UI Goku gets some special treatment when it comes to normals. First, let’s consider UI Goku’s walk. Usually, walking isn’t scrutinized too closely in fighting games since it’s just a simple action. However, Ultra Instinct allows Goku to automatically dodge projectiles whenever he’s walking forward (but only when walking forward). It works very similarly to the universal Super Dash, as it beats single hit projectiles but loses to beams, supers, and certain strong projectiles (like Jiren’s 5S).

UI Goku also has a dedicated “nothing personal” counter in which Goku dodges an incoming attack and teleports behind the opponent. It’s great to close the distance on players who like to rely on zoning and works on everything except for grabs, supers, and command grabs. Finally, UI Goku has a move called “Unrestrained Will,” in which he immediately counters the opponent after being put into a recovery state. However, the start-up is a little long and, if blocked, leaves you wide open.

Notable Special Moves

The special move players will want to look out for is “Unencumbered Mind.” This move makes Goku flip around the opponent and perform different moves depending on which follow-up button is pressed. If Light is pressed, Goku does a simultaneous upside-down punch that can leave the opponent in a prolonged state of block stun. This can also be used in the air to achieve a sliding knockdown. Pressing Medium performs a command grab opponents will find nearly impossible to react to that completely obliterates them. Even more punishing, they can be extended into a full combo when hit in the corner. Finally, the Heavy version causes Goku to punch the opponent so quickly it’s invisible to the human eye. This puts the opponent in a crumple state, allowing Goku to follow up into any combo. Holding any button during “Unencumbered Mind” makes Goku utterly invulnerable to any projectiles and can even dodge certain Supers. It’s an incredibly terrifying move, as opponents have to guess whether or not they have to block left or right or jump to avoid a command grab.

Another unique special move UI Goku has under his belt is “Autonomous Fist,” where Goku punches you with his eyes, similar to how Jiren does. What’s great about this move is that the Medium and Heavy variations can cause sliding knockdowns. Additionally, the Heavy version side switches, which can potentially put opponents into the corner.

Finally, UI Goku has a meter-less reversal called “Rising Heat.” When UI Goku performs this move, he becomes invincible from frame one. This is a fantastic move to stop an opponent’s momentum but leaves players wide open if blocked.

Notable Supers

Arc System Works has made all of Dragon Ball FighterZ super moves spectacles for the eyes, and for UI Goku, they turned it up to 11. UI Goku is one of the few characters who has a dedicated level one counter super. This super counters everything except for throws and other supers. However, because the super is a throw, it will not catch opponents who are crouching.

UI Goku’s level 3, “Silver Dragon Flash,” is pretty typical for a level 3 super. It does decent damage, tracks the opponent, and switches side on hit. The most notable part about this super is the animation. It looks like it was taken straight from the anime.

As common with all new DLC characters, prepare to see UI Goku a lot in ranked and casual matches in the coming days. As long as players keep in mind his unique moveset, countering him should be a little bit easier.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Switch and PC.
