The latest installment in Akira Toriyama’s signature shonen series, Dragon Ball Super, continues to expand upon the classic anime in fulfilling ways. Dragon Ball Super sticks to the series’ roots and caters towards sprawling action spectacles and dazzling transformations of power. Dragon Ball Super’s anime has wrapped up but it continues to release feature films that extend the story, and the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is already set to be one of the biggest anime movies of 2022.

Super Hero turns the clock forward to such a degree that early artwork for the movie highlights teenage versions of Goten and Trunks. Goten and Trunks may not be the centerpiece in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but the movie still presents some exciting opportunities for the Saiyan duo.

8 They Produce A New Failed Fusion

Dragon Ball’s fusion produces a new warrior of unbelievable strength, but it can become an easy way for the series to conquer its problems. Goten and Trunks are distinct characters who’ve been consumed by the fusion concept and are usually only helpful as Gotenks. The fusion dance is a procedure of intense precision and any unbalanced gestures will produce a faulty fused fighter.

Goten and Trunks have made timing mistakes that led to inferior versions of Gotenks. However, Super Hero’s new artwork depicts Goten and Trunks making a different error in their fusion symmetry. This could be a hint that a new abnormal fusion is on the way.

7 They Show Off Some New Moves

One of the biggest reasons that Gotenks is one of Dragon Ball’s more entertaining characters is the ridiculous array of techniques that he unleashes on his opponents. Gotenks is a combination of Goten and Trunks’ strength and abilities, but he also seems to double the juvenile mischief of these two children.

Gotenks has some unique yet childish maneuvers, like his Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, Splitting Headache, Rapid Fire Missile, and more. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero looks at teenage versions of Goten and Trunks, which perhaps means that they’ve developed slightly more mature attacks and fighting styles. Alternatively, maybe their old techniques have gotten even crazier.

6 They Get To Fight Alongside Their Families

The original Dragon Ball begins as a young boy’s adventure, which makes it incredibly powerful that this boy, Goku, matures into an adult and starts his own family. Goten and Trunks represent Dragon Ball’s next generation of heroes and their powerful fathers certainly don’t neglect them, but they’re usually fighting on their own.

Super Hero seems to be pushing the aspect of family on some level and so it’d mean a lot if Goten could fight with his father, brother, and even his cousin, Pan, while Trunks provides support for Vegeta.

5 They Get To Defeat Cell

Full plot details on Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero remain under wraps, but it’s been revealed that long-time enemies, the Red Ribbon Army, will play a crucial role with their new creations Gamma 1 and 2. Cell is technically one of Red Ribbon’s greatest experiments and there have been some enticing rumors that this old villain may also return in some capacity.

Super Hero has a larger focus on Gohan, and a Cell and Gohan rematch makes a lot of sense but it’s nothing new. There’s arguably more weight if Goten follows in his brother’s footsteps and Trunks succeeds where his future version struggled.

4 A New Blue-Haired Design For Gotenks

Dragon Ball’s anime has done an excellent job at adapting Akira Toriyama’s source material, but there are certain inconsistencies between the two, some of which come down to benign design differences. It’s always appreciated when Toriyama’s involvement with a Dragon Ball movie means that he’ll fix these areas, whether it’s the coloring on Piccolo’s arms or Trunks’ hair color, which is frequently in flux.

The art for Super Hero shows that Toriyama has changed Trunks’ hair from purple to blue, like his mother. Naturally, this should lead to a version of Gotenks that has a streak of blue hair instead of purple, which will be a first.

3 They Master New Super Saiyan Transformations

There are many different ways to grow stronger in Dragon Ball, but progress in the anime largely gets reduced to the respective level of Super Saiyan that characters can achieve. Goten and Trunks become Super Saiyans at extraordinarily young ages, which indicates bright futures for the young fighters.

Additionally, Gotenks is the only other character in the anime, besides Goku, that can become Super Saiyan 3. These milestones are still impressive, but it’d be unreasonable to expect Goten and Trunks’ power to become stagnant through their teen years. Stronger transformations for these characters, both as individuals and as Gotenks, are long overdue.

2 Interaction With Universe 6 Saiyans

Goten and Trunks get introduced in the later half of Dragon Ball Z’s run and they largely fill the purpose as budding warriors who still have a lot to learn. Dragon Ball Super radically expands the scope of the franchise with the existence of different universes, one of which contains plenty of Saiyans.

Cabba, Caulifla, and Kale from Universe 6 are fascinating characters. In many ways, their wide-eyed take on battle feels similar to Goten and Trunks. There’s a lot of value in these Saiyans all training together and becoming friends.

1 They Contribute To The Winning Battle

One of the difficulties that series like Dragon Ball faces is that there’s not always room for everyone to contribute. Dragon Ball has dozens of characters with unbelievable power, but more often than not, it’s Goku who gets to deliver the finishing blow — especially when it comes to the series’ feature film installments.

Goku’s wins are still exciting, but it’s become a repetitive structure for Dragon Ball. Goten and Trunks don’t necessarily need to defeat Red Ribbon and the Gamma fighters on their own, but they deserve to be involved in the fight’s climax. These older versions of the characters are finally in a position where they can be real assets.
