WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 75, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English through Viz Media.

Thanks to the power he gained from Planet Cereal’s Dragon Balls, Granolah was able to best Goku — even with the Saiyan using Ultra Instinct. So when his battle with Granolah began in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 74, Vegeta looked sure to lose. However, the Saiyan Prince proved that he had a trick up his sleeve when, at the end of the chapter, he unveiled his new transformation. Now, in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 75, he gives it a name.

Dragon Ball Super Chpater 75 kicks off with Vegeta unleashing his power against Granolah. As the two brawl, though, it becomes apparent that Vegeta’s transformation more than just looks different from Goku’s Ultra Instinct form. Following his upgrade, Vegeta essentially stops dodging blows, instead allowing Granolah to hit him at several occasions, explaining that it gets him hyped up for battle. In turn, this increased desire to battle makes Vegeta stronger in this new form.

Soon, Vegeta smashes Granolah into the ruins of a Cerealian city. After using an energy shield to temporarily halt the Saiyan Prince’s onslaught, Granolah observes that Vegeta’s transformation is different than Goku’s. “Don’t you dare compare his pathetic technique to my own,” Vegeta says. “Kakarrot’s body may have a mind of its own, but I’m all ego. In fact, go ahead and call this Ultra Ego.” Vegeta then unleashes another round of attacks against Granolah.

As a name, Ultra Ego is something of a perfect representation of Vegeta, even if it is a bit on the nose. The Saiyan Prince has always been egotistical, and that’s a big part of what’s driven him to compete with Goku for basically the entirety of his time in the series. That ego has gotten him into trouble in the past, like when he chose to side with Babidi in Dragon Ball Z, thus becoming Majin Vegeta.

However, training with Beerus — Universe 7’s egotistical God of Destruction — has seemingly shown Vegeta a different way to channel his ego into fighting power. As Vegeta notes in his conversation with Granolah, this Ultra Ego power is entirely his own. All Beerus did was get Vegeta to tap into what was already there.

In the end, Vegeta doesn’t succeed in his battle against Granolah, in large part because the Saiyan Prince’s confidence causes him to take too much damage while also allowing the Cerealian to grow stronger. That being said, as Vegeta learns to master this power more, he may just find that Ultra Ego is his way to outdo Ultra Instinct — and Goku — once and for all.

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 76 does not have a confirmed English release date through Viz Media at this time.
