Dragon Ball Super Vegeta Cast Aside His Pride At The Worst Moment

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Dragon Ball Super chapter 78!

The Dragon Ball Super manga just gave Vegeta an opening to redeem himself by potentially leveraging his new transformation Ultra Ego to defeat the new villain Gas and surpass Goku in the process. But, instead, the proud prince actually relinquishes his Saiyan pride so Granolah the Cerealian can exact vengeance.

Vegeta makes this surprising gesture after hearing the truth about Granolah’s tragic past. The Cerealian has learned from his Namekian caretaker Monaito that his mother wasn’t killed by the Saiyans as he previously thought. She was murdered by Gas, the “muscle” of an intel group known as the Heeter Force that Granolah now works for as their bounty hunter. In other words, Granolah is employed by his mother’s killers and never knew it. And now Gas has arrived in chapter 78 to kill a weakened Granolah who has been battling Goku and Vegeta for the last few installments.

Dragon Ball Super originally created what turned out to be a false impression when Vegeta unlocked the transformation Ultra Ego, which allows him to tap into the boundless amount of power that Ultra Instinct provides while maintaining control of his body. But Vegeta soundly lost against Granolah, ruining the chance of him finally surpassing Goku, who has been perpetually one step ahead of the Saiyan Prince ever since transforming into a Super Saiyan before him. Upon the sudden arrival of Gas, the new villain quickly proceeds to kill the weakened Granolah, which is now possible since Gas’ comrades just used the Cerealian Dragon Balls to grant their wish to make Gas the most powerful warrior in the universe. During the ensuing massacre, Vegeta is presented with the opportunity of eating a Senzu Bean to regain his strength and potentially take down this new threat who later makes short work of Goku. And yet, Vegeta decides to give the bean to Granolah instead so that he can seek vengeance for his mother’s death by defeating Gas.

Vegeta has been waiting for the day when he finally surpasses Goku, a low-level Saiyan who was born so weak that it should have been impossible for him to even dream of coming close to his power. The fact that Goku continually reaches pivotal milestones first and defeats powerful enemies instead of him has been slowly eating away at Vegeta because of his Saiyan pride, a profoundly strong emotion that is further exacerbated by the fact that he’s a prince and was destined to rule over all Saiyans as their most powerful warrior. Ironically, Vegeta has never gotten as close to finally overcoming Goku than in Dragon Ball Super. This has happened on multiple occasions, like when he learned a new ability that Goku couldn’t master with the Yardrats – and especially when he achieved Ultra Ego. But all of the progress he makes in each circumstance always ends in failure.

This was supposed to be Vegeta’s moment in Dragon Ball Super, and yet, he actually lets go of his Saiyan pride for the first time to help an enemy who has been trying to kill him. Not only that, but Vegeta recently chose to go into battle without Goku, knowing full well that he would likely die as a result. His pride wouldn’t allow it even if they could have won together. It’s intriguing that Vegeta’s pride forced him to almost sacrifice himself when there was no chance of him winning, but he is now able to cast aside that pride when victory is so much more assured. This proves how that perhaps the one thing Vegeta values over his Siayan pride is vengeance.
