Dragon Ball Super Why The Red Ribbon Army Is Back In Super Hero

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero brings back the Red Ribbon Army, but how did the evil organization survive? The Red Ribbon Army faced off against a young Goku back in the original Dragon Ball series, when the Saiyan tore through every single member. Unbeknownst to Goku, the Red Ribbon’s Dr. Gero survived and created a series of androids programmed for revenge. After Cell was defeated and Androids 17 and 18 reformed, however, the Red Ribbon Army looked done for good.

At a special NYCC panel, a trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero finally landed, offering a glance at the CG animation and disclosing more details about the plot. Due for release in 2022, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero follows its mightily successful predecessor, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and takes place ten years after Majin Buu’s defeat. The trailer shows Goku doing what he loves best, and he’s found a new sparring partner in Broly, seemingly on Beerus’ planet with the God of Destruction’s begrudged blessing. Whether or not Broly had to do Beerus’ laundry in exchange for the privilege remains to be seen. Also training are Piccolo and his new student Pan, who’s now around 4-years-old, but they’re interrupted by the arrival of Gamma 2 – one of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’s twin villains.

Most curious of all, the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero trailer confirms the Red Ribbon Army is back! Gamma 2 (and Gamma 1, we assume) wears the familiar Red Ribbon Army logo on their arm, which was absent from earlier concept designs revealed in July. That pesky Red Ribbon logo rears its head once more during a shady car ride between three unnamed men with criminally bad hair – one on a cup, and another on a second man’s suit.

One possibility is that the Red Ribbon Army lives on, either through a descendant taking over the family business, or a scientist super-fan of Dr. Gero’s, picking up where the evil genius left off. The unnamed character swigging from the Red Ribbon cup is shown in a photograph wearing a lab coat, and since Cell’s defeat, Goku and his friends have been busy tackling God-level threats. Gero Jr. (if that’s indeed who bowl-cut man is) could’ve rebuilt the Red Ribbon Army in the shadows whilst the Z-Fighters were off dealing with angels and angry lost Saiyans. Revenge against Goku would be Red Ribbon Army 2.0’s most obvious goal.

Alternatively, a third party might be exploiting the Red Ribbon Army’s reputation for their own ends. The “Super Hero” title of Dragon Ball’s new movie hints toward someone donning a rubber outfit and fighting crime. Assuming Gohan’s Great Saiyaman isn’t making a comeback, the titular “Super Hero” is probably the guy drinking from the Red Ribbon cup, who wears a purple outfit with a “H” in the center. Notice also how the cup contains pills (or ice cubes, but that’s less exciting), rather than a tasty cold beverage. These drugs could give the costumed character temporary powers.

Also in the car is a man with a hairstyle that’d make Johnny Bravo jealous. It’s unclear who works for whom, but the small, purple-suited “superhero” appears to be heading on a mission. The conspirators may be trying to falsely manufacture a popular new hero, and for that, they need a cooperative villain or two to “defeat.” Perhaps the fake superhero is being driven to where Gamma 1 and 2 are attacking, so he can rock up and save the day. By pretending the Gammas are Red Ribbon, people would be reminded of the horrors perpetrated by the Army, the Androids, and Cell in the past, and would be grateful for their new savior.

The Johnny Bravo wannabe shows Gamma 1 and 2 mugshots of Goku, Vegeta and Buu, indicating the pair will be targeting the Z-Warriors, but for what purpose? Dr. Gero’s deadly obsession with Goku reached beyond his own mortality via Cell and the Androids – will the Red Ribbon Army continue that legacy and seek vengeance on the Z-Warriors who wronged them in the past? Or, if these villains are merely taking advantage of the Red Ribbon Army’s name to strike fear into the population and create their own superhero, are Goku, Vegeta and Buu the real heroes they need to keep quiet in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero?
