A game modder added Shaggy from Scooby-Doo to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The new installment in the Dragon Ball franchise attracted the attention of game modders, who had fun adding grotesque playable characters.

Another modder, Mastaklo, replaced Goku with a static version of the Untitled Goose, creating a hysterical version of the game. Other mods introduced Ultrawide support and a Latin American translation of the in-game texts. Released on January 17, 2020, Kakarot has very positive reviews overall. It was the best selling game in the UK during the third week of January, and as a result, a lot of modders have been giving it a look.

On Kakarot’s official release date, popular modder Beatz published a short video clip on Twitter from his own version of the popular game. The playable character, instead of Goku, is Shaggy from Scooby Doo. It’s amusing to see the coward, goofy member of Mystery Inc. fighting like a real warrior. In fact, the video shows that Beatz created custom animations for Shaggy, making him perform jump kicks and Ki Blast moves.

Surprisingly, many players would really want to see the wimp and buffoonish Shaggy as a playable character in fighting games. Following the spread of an “Ultra Instinct Shaggy” meme, which shows the character performing Goku’s ultra instinct transformation, fans created a petition to include Scooby Doo’s best friend in Mortal Kombat 11. The petition collected over 370,000 signatures, but Shaggy wasn’t eventually added to the game. However, he is the protagonist of a hilarious game mod for Jump Force, created by Beatz in collaboration with the artist Vaanrose. This mod replaces Vegeta with the blond-haired teen from Scooby Doo. Shaggy is a full-voiced character but, unlike the original Jump Force fighters, he has no facial animations.

The most likely reason why game developers refuse to include Shaggy as an official character in fighting games is his personality, which is very different from the masculinity standards of the genre. Still, the fans are clearly enjoying playing as Scooby’s friend in the most popular combat games, despite the unavoidable limits of unofficial mods. The inclusion of Shaggy, while amusing, also offers players an interesting and different body type to inhabit while playing through a game that’s filled to the brim with muscle-bound men.
