Since it was based on a video game, it’s safe to say that most a large part of the people who watched Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma were fans of the game. As such, it’s only natural for the anime or show to sprinkle in some homages or references to the game that would definitely turn the heads of anyone who has played it.

Sure enough, they did include them– albeit even too faithfully to the game and it sometimes ruined the pacing of the show. Still, there’s plenty that fans of the video games will appreciate in the Netflix adaptation from monsters to even character similarity. These ten things in the anime ought to be recognized by any fan of Dragon’s Dogma.

10 The Scar’s Placement

Taking someone’s heart and eating it in front of them while they watch and basically turn semi-immortal is always a shocking sight. What might be more surprising to viewers is how the heart was extracted– the dragon just ripped it out from where it is and it left a mark. Except that scar seems a bit off and too centered in Ethan’s chest.

Well, that’s just how it was placed in the video games. The scar which was the result of the furious heart-ripping was always in the center of the player character’s chest and is rather unsightly. Any fan of the game will be pleased to know that the anime got the scar placement correctly, lore-wise.

9 The Spells and Abilities

In addition to scars, some elements of the combat in Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma could only be understood by those who have played the games. Certain spells such as the one Hannah used to heal Ethan (called Anodyne in the game) are there alright.

In addition, Hannah often casts some magic arrow abilities that need to be charged. Only gamers will know why this is so after having been massacred too many times in the game by charging their attacks at the wrong moment. Weapon elemental infusions are also present should make the video game fans chuckle at most.

8 The Dragon’s Appearance

Right off the bat, this was one of the things that Dragon’s Dogma fans would recognize. They didn’t even have to watch the whole show– the trailer itself revealed that it’s the very same dragon in the video games, at least in terms of appearance.

It’s that identical red and horned dragon who also looks a bit smarter than your regular fire-breathing beast. The difference is that the show’s dragon doesn’t seem to have a name whereas it’s called Grigori in the game, implying that it was once a human or another sentient creature.

7 Cassardis

Cassardis is one of the most memorable places in the video game since it’s also where the players start off their adventure. It seems a bit bigger in the show but the general layout looks similar. It’s also still a poor coastal fishing village that’s poorly garrisoned or defended.

One thing that the players of the game might notice is how the showrunners decided Cassardis’ fate. In the show, the dragon burned down all of Cassardis and appeared to have killed everyone there except Ethan. The game didn’t make the dragon that cruel or vicious and it simply left after choosing an Arisen.

6 Ethan Clinging to the Monsters

The viewers who haven’t played the game might feel a bit confused with some of Ethan’s tendencies and tactical knowledge as he prefers to cling or hang on to much bigger opponents instead of using his brain or his pawn. After all, he was a proficient hunter who was skilled with a bow during the first episode.

Those who have been introduced to the video game’s awesome combat system know why this is. That’s how huge monsters were fought in the game. It allowed the players to scale and climb onto bigger opponents so they can reach the weak spots if they have melee weapons. It looked epic in the game of course, but way too ridiculous in the anime.

5 Nighttime Being More Dangerous

The first time both Ethan and Hannah tried to seek shelter from a night rain inside a decrepit church, they immediately got assaulted by hordes of skeleton commanded by the resident lich of the sanctum. That pretty much sums up how it is to wander around at night in the video game of Dragon’s Dogma.

Players know all too well just how much more deadly it is to go out on a nighttime expedition in Gransys in the video game. The show thankfully kept this in mind with the skeleton army or even the griffon in one of the episodes.

4 Balthazar Looks Like Julien

For some reason, Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma didn’t include some of the most interesting characters from the game into the show which is a shame. However, they still managed to sneak in someone with similar appearance and behavior, such as Balthazar, the young nobleman who betrayed his friend Simon in the “Greed” episode.

At first glance, those who played the game might even mistake Balthazar for an identical-looking character like Julien who is also a nobleman with selfish intentions. Much like Balthazar, Julien also resorted to dirty methods to get what he wants for his country or his name.

3 Hannah’s Lack of Emotion

Hannah never really went into detail what exactly is a pawn, only what pawns are supposed to do which doesn’t help the viewers have much sympathy for her. Still, not much explanation is needed for those who are fans of the video game.

They’ll even be pleased to see that the game didn’t take too much liberty with the pawn personality– or lack thereof. Hannah was about as human as pawns can get and even so, they’re not exactly as talkative as her or as caring. They’re just loyal to the Arisen by default which is what Hannah is the very first moment she appears.

2 The Lantern

Lots of elements and details in Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma don’t really make much sense which is why some of the viewers likely overlooked why Ethan and Hannah needed a lantern in the “Sloth” episode to go to the hydra’s lair when they could have just lit a torch.

Again, game fans likely wouldn’t have questioned this logic because the most prominent source of light in the video game was the lantern. It just so happens that the lantern in the show looks identical to the one used in the game.

1 Dragon Ride During The Final Fight

Another puzzling thing would be the final fight where among the many things that stood out there as nonsense, the dragon back ride is the most bewildering. It’s pretty much a recreation of the epic boss fight in the video game against virtually the same dragon.

It also served as an opportunity for an exposition and a philosophical discussion between the Arisen and the dragon. It was definitely more fitting for a game than a show since it was interactive in the former. Still, it was a good effort from the anime to remind the video game fans of that spectacular dragon battle.
