F9 What Mias Return Means For Brians Ending

Mia is set to return in The Fast and Furious 9, so what does this mean for Brian’s story? Jordana Brewster’s The Fast Saga character has been in the franchise since its inception, but more recently, she sat out Fate of the Furious to preserve how the film series wrote out the late Paul Walker’s character. Now, however, she reunites Dom and his crew, and from the looks of it, she appears to be actively participating in their upcoming mission. But since Mia is significantly linked to Brian’s arc, it’s a question of what her impending comeback means for her husband.

Having a close relationship with her brother, it was only a matter of time until Mia joined Dom’s crew after getting involved with his sketchy dealings in The Fast and the Furious. As she developed a romantic relationship with the crew’s newest member at that time, Brian, she had also become much more involved with the team’s activities despite them getting increasingly dangerous. While the most important men in her life have no problem risking their lives for their various endeavors, they’re both protective of Mia, hence why she’s typically operated on the sidelines, especially when she and Brian decided to start a family.

When Walker died before filming for Furious 7 ended, the filmmakers decided to give him a less tragic send-off, The Fast Saga explained his future absence by revealing he’d retired from the team’s wild adventures to live a quiet family life with Mia. Something will have to change, however, as his wife is back in action in F9. For now, that reason is uncertain, but based on what’s known about the film, there’s a way to justify her return. As confirmed, Dom and Mia’s estranged brother, Jakob, will be the main villain of the narrative. Backed by Cipher, who was first introduced in The Fate of the Furious, it’s clear that there was a serious falling out between Mia’s brothers, so much so that Jakob is hell-bent on seeking revenge and killing Dom. It’s not yet clear how Jakob thinks of his sister, but it’s safe to say that Mia’s allegiance is with Dom.

Assuming that this is the case, how does this affect Brian’s known ending in The Fast Saga? There are a couple of possibilities to tackle this situation. For starters, Brian O’Conner can skip the cars and simply sit things out to keep their children safe in F9. While he’s typically the one who joins the action, Mia’s personal connection to the conflict between her brothers understandably makes her eager to be involved. Since they’re adamant about keeping their kids out of harm’s way, doing this is the logical way to move forward given circumstances. Otherwise, the franchise may decide to change Brian’s arc and kill him off to explain Mia rejoining Dom’s upcoming endeavor. Frankly, this second option sounds more unlikely as the Fast Saga has gone through great lengths to ensure that Brian gets a happy ending. For a character as integral to the universe as Brian, it would be a disservice both to his character and Walker himself if Brian were to meet his end off-screen.

At this point, there’s no word on whether or not Brian will at least have a brief cameo in The Fast and Furious 9. Despite Walker’s death, The Fast Saga can use the same tech and filmmaking techniques to give him the poignant ending in Furious 7 for a potential return. However, chances of it happening in the upcoming blockbuster are slim. Instead, this might be something that they’re saving for the franchise’s final installment.
