It shouldn’t be too surprising that the recent Dungeons & Dragons book, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, contains a section about the powerful tome that the titular witch is mostly responsible for writing: the Demonomicon of Iggwilv. This article will contain everything there is to know regarding this artifact according to the sourcebook.
What was originally called the Tome of Zyx when under the ownership of the Wizard, Zagig Yragene, is now the Demonomicon of Iggwilv – after his iconic D&D lover Iggwilv (or Tasha) stole it, modified it, and added a great deal of dark and powerful knowledge to it. The artifact is described as being an expansive treatise containing the Abyss’s infinite layers and inhabitants, which is fitting as Tasha has spent much time in that realm herself.
The book is considered the “most thorough and blasphemous tome of demonology in the multiverse,” according to Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and it depicts all the profanities of the Abyss and its demons. Many demonic entities have tried to salvage their secrets by ripping out pages from the Demonomicon, but due to the volume containing a secret piece of D&D’s infamous Abyss itself, the book continues to remain current. Here is a description of the properties, spells, and features the holder of this wondrous item has access to.
Dungeons & Dragons: Demonomicon Of Iggwilv Properties
The Demonomicon in Dungeons & Dragons is a wondrous item that requires attunement. It allows the user two minor beneficial properties, a minor detrimental property, and a major detrimental property that can be rolled for via the various Artifact Properties tables in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. It has eight charges, and 1d8 expended charges can be regained each dawn.
While holding the Demonomicon, the user can use an action to cast Tasha’s Hideous Laughter or expend a number of charges to cast one of the following D&D spells with an astonishing Save DC of 20: Magic Circle (1 charge); Magic Jar (3 charges); Planar Ally (3 charges); Planar Binding (2 charges); Plane Shift (to layers of the Abyss only, 3 charges); and Summon Fiend (3 charges; appears in the Demonomicon). The artifact also contains the following traits:
- Abyssal Reference allows for making an Intelligence check to ascertain demon information or a Wisdom (Survival) check for Abyss-related details, adding double the user’s proficiency bonus to the check.
- Fiendish Scourging grants the book’s owner the ability to use the max possible result for a damage roll against a fiend without actually having to roll any dice in this D&D scenario.
- Ensnarement lets the user to cast the Magic Circle spell naming only fiends, or the Planar Binding spell targeting a fiend, to cast that spell at the 9th level, regardless of what level spell slot is used. The fiend receives disadvantage on its saving throw against the spell.
- Containment lets the user holding the book target a fiend within sight that’s contained within a Magic Circle. D&D‘s rules say it must succeed a DC 20 Charisma saving throw with disadvantage or become trapped within one of the first 10 blank pages of the Demonomicon. The page then fills with information about the imprisoned creature’s depravities. This action can’t be used again until dawn the following day. Furthermore, after a long rest, if the book and its owner are on the same plane of existence, a trapped creature with the highest Challenge Rating in the book can attempt to possess the player. A failure on a DC 20 Charisma saving throw results in the player being controlled like a puppet. On a successful save, the fiend must wait seven days before attempting the possession again. When the book is discovered, there are already 1d4 D&D fiends occupying its pages.
- Destroying the Demonomicon requires six demon lords to tear out a sixth of the book’s pages, which will reappear after 24 hours. Before that time, anyone who writes in the book is transported to a layer of the Abyss that’s hidden within the book. There lies a long-lost artifact, Fraz-Urb’luu’s Staff. If taken from its pocket plane, the tome is reduced to a “mundane and quite out-of-date copy of the Tome of Zyx.” The demon lord Fraz-Urb’luu – a classic Dungeons & Dragons character – will instantly know if his staff is taken.
