Dungeons & Dragons New Campaign Is Icewind Dale Rime Of The Frostmaiden

The next Dungeons & Dragons campaign has been officially announced at D&D Live 2020, and Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden will be hitting store shelves in September. Icewind Dale is one of the most famous locations in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting and it has been used as the basis for three video games (the two Icewind Dale titles and the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance).

The current edition of Dungeons & Dragons has been releasing campaigns with the backing of online promotional campaigns, as was the case with 2019’s Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, which was the focus of the D&D Live 2019 event before it was released. New D&D campaigns receive celebrity endorsements, and their storylines are incorporated into ongoing D&D video games in a promotional push fans would never have dreamed of back in the days of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. A new D&D Live event is taking place in 2020, and there has been speculation that the next D&D campaign would take place in Icewind Dale based on a number of clues related to its promotional material and from statements made by Wizards of the Coast.

The next Dungeons & Dragons campaign was officially been announced at D&D Live 2020: Roll w/ Advantage, and players will engage in a battle against the elements themselves in Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. The story of the campaign is tied to a winter that never ends, which is likely connected to Auril (the goddess of cold, who is sometimes to referred to as the Frostmaiden) whose symbol appears on the box of an upcoming set of premium dice which are being released alongside the adventure.

From what we have learned about Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden in a press-event before D&D Live 2020: Roll w/ Advantage, the campaign will take players from level 1-12 if played as a whole. The different adventures which make up the newest D&D campaign are designed so that they can be played on their own or slotted into existing games, with helpful introductions added to make it easier for DMs to prepare for each session. Like Curse of Strahd before it, Icewind Dale is intended to be a horror campaign, where the player must survive against the harsh environment. It’s not just the outside world that the players must fear, as they won’t be able to fully trust their allies either. Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden will give players their own secrets as part of the mechanics of the campaign, and it’s up to each player if they want to hide part of their history from the group or face the consequences of being honest.

The storyline of Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is set in the modern era of D&D, which means that Drizzt Do’Urden is now considered a legendary figure. It has been clarified that the campaign takes place long after the events of Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, even though they both use the same location. The adventure is set to include a number of cold-themed Dungeons & Dragons monsters (like snow golems and owlbears that have adjusted to living in the frozen north) and the players will have to explore both the snow-covered tundra and locations beneath Icewind Dale that have never been detailed before.

Gamers around the world have had a chance to explore Icewind Dale in the video games in the past including the recent Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition for modern systems, but the frozen north of the Forgotten Realms is a lot different than what it is was in the days of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. This new iteration of the setting promises to be even deadlier than the one that came before it. The players will have to survive against hordes of monsters, the never-ending snow, and even their own allies, in what could be the scariest Dungeons & Dragons campaign yet.
