Dwayne Johnson Has a Great Idea for San Andreas 2

Dwayne Johnson reveals that there’s a great idea in place for San Andreas 2. The disaster film follows a rescue-chopper pilot (Johnson) who, after an earthquake hits Los Angeles, teams up with his estranged wife to find their daughter before another series of seismic shifts decimates the west coast. The film received mixed reviews from critics but earned $474 million at the global box office on a $110 million budget.

In addition to Johnson, San Andreas also features performances from Alexandra Daddario, Carla Gugino, and Paul Giamatti. The film was directed by Brad Peyton, who would go on to work on 2018’s Rampage, which Johnson also starred in. Not long after the release of San Andreas, a sequel was reportedly in the early stages of development at New Line Cinema with Peyton expected to return to direct but the project was seemingly San Adreas 2 never came to fruition. It’s now been six years since San Andreas was released and Johnson has gone on to star in Hobbs and Shaw and Jungle Cruise, and will also appear in the upcoming Netflix film Red Notice alongside Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds.

In a new interview with SiriusXM, Johnson reveals that an idea for the sequel has already been discussed internally at Seven Bucks, his production company. While Johnson doesn’t go into any details regarding what the idea might entail, he does say the idea is “great.” Unfortunately for fans, however, Johnson explains that the biggest problem he’s facing in terms of actually putting things into motion with the San Andreas sequel is scheduling. “There’s a great idea for San Andreas that we had, I think it’s great. You know the challenge that we’re having honestly is what you guys said, is scheduling.”

Johnson is one of the biggest and most in-demand stars in the world right now, so it makes sense scheduling for the sequel is proving difficult. Johnson is starring in the upcoming superhero film Black Adam and is also headlining DC’s League of Super-Pets. In addition to those films, Johnson’s IMDb states that he will be appearing in The King, Doc Savage, and Big Trouble in Little China, not to mention the recently-announced sequel to Jungle Cruise. Basically, Johnson’s next few years appear to be jam-packed with projects.

Although Johnson doesn’t give anything away in terms of what the plot for San Andreas 2 would actually entail, climate change and the associated rise in extreme weather events means that there is never any shortage of ideas – and cataclysmic natural events – to pull from. If the sequel is truly going to up the ante, the film could take inspiration from other successful disaster movies, like The Day After Tomorrow, and branch out beyond just earthquakes. Unfortunately for fans, though, it’s looking like San Andreas 2 won’t be coming any time soon, at least not until Johnson can find time in his busy schedule.
