DWTS Cody Rigsby Reveals Why QueenThemed Week Means A Lot to Him

Dancing With The Stars contestant Cody Rigsby revealed that this week’s Queen theme means so much to him because he is excited to honor a fellow gay man, the lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury. Cody and his partner, Cheryl Burke, who recently returned to the dance floor following their battles with breakthrough COVID-19, will dance the foxtrot to Queen’s hit song “You’re My Best Friend.” Cody hopes that this dance will be another great addition to the body of work that he has been building during the season so far.

Cody and Cheryl have had it much harder than the other contestants this season because they were isolated from each other due to their illnesses. After surviving elimination during the first two weeks, Cody received word that Cheryl had tested positive for COVID-19, with Cody following shortly after. The Peloton instructor was devastated that he might have to miss Britney Spears Week but was thrilled when the producers found a way to allow Cheryl and Cody to train and dance virtually from their separate quarantine locations. Throughout the next few weeks, Cody returned to the in-person ballroom and has consistently improved, moving from 6’s across the board from the judges in Week 1 to four 9’s for last week’s Cha-Cha-Cha to “There Will Be Blood” during Horror Week.

This week, Cody is especially excited because it is Queen Week, celebrating the legendary rock group. Cody, who is gay, is looking forward to honoring Freddie Mercury and called Queen’s music “iconic.” In an interview with Parade, he revealed, “As a queen, I am very much a Queen fan. It’s going to be a really great song for us because of the story that I hope to tell, not only through the dance but through the package. It is something super personal and I’m excited to share with the world.” Cody has been a fan of the group since he was in high school and feels that Queen has become an integral part of American culture. He shared, “They are so embedded in our culture that even if you might not love a song, you know it because it’s been played so many times. I think that there’s always going to be a connection to that music. I’m so excited to also honor another queer man, another gay man, on this stage, so I’m super excited.”

With only nine couples left, Cody and Cheryl will perform not only their solo dances but Relay Dances as well. During the Relay Dances, the couples will be separated into three groups of three. The winner of each group will earn bonus points from the judges for performing the best within each relay. In addition to their foxtrot, Cheryl and Cody will dance the jive to Queen’s hit song “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” along with group members The Miz/Witney Carson and Iman Shumpert/Daniella Karagach. His improvements with his dancing each week give him a good chance of winning the bonus points from the group. The inspiration he will channel from Freddie Mercury should also motivate him.
