Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

It’s been a long time since Harry, Hermione, and Ron managed to find and destroy all of Voldemort’s horcruxes and save the wizarding world… but just because it all ended well doesn’t mean that we don’t have questions about this particular bit of dark magic.

Like many of the burning questions that the Harry Potter fandom has, some of these may eventually be answered by Rowling herself (given her predilection for using Twitter to add to canon), but in the meantime, we’re still waiting for some of these answers to come to light.

9 Why Did Tom Riddle Not Aim For The Philosopher’s Stone

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

By the time of the first Harry Potter book, Voldemort was mostly dead and trying to get his non-corporeal hands on the philosopher’s stone, but why didn’t he get this in the first place? For a dark wizard hell-bent on becoming immortal, it would seem logical for him to attempt to take out Nicholas Flamel back when he was a strong young man, rising to power. Clearly, he knew about it, because it is famous, and Flamel has been old and weak (despite being immortal) for years. Why did Riddle go for horcruxes first?

8 How Was Harry A Horcrux If It Needs An Incantation?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

While Rowling never explicitly laid out the spell for making a Horcrux the way that she did for other spells in the series (like polyjuice potion, for example), but it is mentioned that there is an incantation component. However, when Voldemort made Harry into a horcrux, it was an accident. This may have only happened because of how damaged he already was from all the soul-splitting, but how could this happen without the spell part of the spell?

7 …And If It Doesn’t, Do Murderers Accidentally Make Them?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

If Voldemort was able to accidentally start creating horcruxes because his soul was so damaged from all the murder he’d been up to, does that mean that serial killers have accidentally ended up making horcruxes?

Murder is described as the main part of making a horcrux, but surely there are plenty of common-variety murderers in the wizarding world… are they leaving bits of their souls around, too, if the incantation isn’t necessary for severely damaged souls?

6 How Did Herpo The Foul Die If He Made The First Horcrux?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

In Harry Potter lore, the only other wizard who made a horcrux was named Herpo the Foul (and wouldn’t you be foul, if your name was ‘Herpo’?!) – but it’s not clear what happened to him. Horcruxes make a wizard functionally immortal, so why isn’t Herpo still around today – and why are there no records of how the horcrux was destroyed?

5 …And Why Did He Get A Chocolate Frog Card For Doing So?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

The reason that we know about Herpo is that he has a chocolate frog card – reserved for the famous and notable. However, Herpo’s achievements seem limited to creating a horcrux, and breeding the first Basilisk. While these are certainly notable enough to get him in the history books, it seems surprising that the inventor of the darkest kind of dark magic in the wizarding world would get a card meant for children to collect… It makes sense from the perspective of these being a way for Rowling to teach fans about wizarding history, but in-universe it just seems bizarre.

4 Why Did ‘Secrets Of The Darkest Art’ Even Exist In A School Library?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

The only book that is known to give the exact spell for creating a horcrux is ‘Secrets Of The Darkest Art’, which was seemingly part of the Hogwarts library collection. Dumbledore did move it from the library to his office, but not it was clearly too late. But even in the headmaster’s office or the Restricted Section (where it was prior), what on earth was this doing in a school library? This isn’t the wizarding version of Oxford, there are literal children attending – surely there was no need for this to be there?

3 Why Do His Horcruxes Behave Differently?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

Fans have pointed this out many times, but it seems that Voldemort’s horcruxes behave differently, depending on… well, on what the story requires! The first real horcruz that the Golden Trio encounters is the diary, and it is so powerful that it is able to possess Ginny and act more like a ghost than anything else.

However, later horcruxes either start to poison the mind of the person carrying them (like the locket), or occasionally seem to do… absolutely nothing. This is clearly because some of them are needed to drive the plot more, but still. It could do with a lot more explanation.

2 How Many Horcruxes Could One Person Make?

Harry Potter Unanswered Questions We Still Have About The Horcruxes

It seems that Voldemort hit the limit for horcruxes, given that his soul ‘splintered’ in the end with his attack on Harry and his parents. However, it’s not clear if this was the number made, the length of time he had spent using them, his general evildoing, or something else. It’s also not clear if some people may have more of an ability to tolerate the making of multiple horcruxes than other people do – Rowling hints that it’s the terrible nature of killing that is at the heart of the horcruxes that destroy him, so what about those murderers (again)? If a good person made a horcrux, would they be able to make more of them with less damage?

1 Why Do Horcruxes Destroy Noses?

Ok, this one is just a little bit silly, but it needs to be asked! It’s clear that the more horcruxes Voldemort makes, the more haggard and less human that he looks. He is increasingly pale and hollow-cheeked… but why would a horcrux, even sapping the life-force out of a wizard, mean that he loses his nose?! Yes, it was a makeup/costume choice made in order to create a more inhuman and threatening appearance, but it’s something that will just never totally make sense.
