Gilmore Girls: Every Main Character, Ranked By Funniness

With its witty leading ladies, Gilmore Girls is a series known for its charm. But while some characters enjoy witty banter, others are more serious.

The beloved Gilmore Girls is famous for having characters who talk fast. Everyone from the mother-daughter protagonists Lorelai and Rory to Lorelai’s mom Emily has a quick wit, and most of the dialogue involves bantering, sparring, and joking around.

Many of the characters have faced hard times, with diner owner Luke Danes experiencing some sadness on a regular basis. Despite the tragedies that those in Stars Hollow experience, the show is hilarious and most of the characters have a great sense of humor. But while some have a joke ready for any situation, others struggle to see the comedy in their daily life.

11 Richard Gilmore

While Rory’s grandfather Richard, is an intelligent man who speaks his mind, it’s hard to say that he’s as hilarious as the rest of his family.

Richard spends a lot of time in a bad mood and he has a harsh way of viewing the world. It’s entertaining when he jokes around with Emily and tries to get under her skin, as they’ve been married for so long, and it’s clear he has a big heart. He does have moments, but when he makes viewers laugh, his words always have a judgemental ring to them. He’s definitely the least funny character in the series.

10 Dean Forester

Dean Forester might just be the most good-natured person on the series. He’s got a good attitude and manners, but that doesn’t translate to having a sense of humor.

While Rory loves being with Dean and they have a nice time together, she doesn’t spend a lot of time laughing hysterically, and their dialogue isn’t as funny or clever as it could be. Dean is polite and would always laugh at someone’s jokes, but he doesn’t make many of his own. He’s too serious and more focused on being loyal and doing what’s expected of him.

9 Logan Huntzberger

Rory falls deeply in love with Logan when she meets him at Yale but he makes a lot of bad decisions and hurts Rory a lot.

Logan might think that he’s funny, but he’s too conceited to be truly hilarious, so he’s ranked pretty low. He calls Rory “Ace” and always smirks at whoever he’s talking to. While some of the other Gilmore Girls characters are highly quotable, it’s hard to recall anything particularly funny that Logan said. He and Rory spend a lot of time defining their relationship or thinking about the future, and it’s not a laughing matter when Logan cheats on Rory. Logan has never had to try too hard to do anything in life, so he doesn’t really care about being a funny person.

8 Lane Kim

Rory’s quirky and kind best friend, Lane Kim, has many moments of humor on the show. For instance, when she’s got a crush on Dave, she says to Rory, “Of course, I don’t exactly have what you and Dean have because you love Dean and Dean loves you back. In my situation, I love Dave and Dave thinks that I have a decent sense of rhythm.”

During her time in high school, Lane is upset and trying to rebel, but she has her funny moments that make fans smile.

7 Jess Mariano

Jess is incredibly sarcastic and his jokes always have a bitter edge to them, so his humor might not be for everyone. But he tries to be funny in every situation and that counts for a lot.

Whether dressing up like Luke just to get a rise out of him or poking fun at Stars Hollow, Jess is intelligent and that makes him funny. He has his own way of responding to others. When Rory is trying to tutor him, he asks,Hey, are we gonna do some of those Schoolhouse Rocks songs?” and jokes that “a mind is a terrible thing to waste.” It’s hard not to at least smile when Jess is onscreen.

6 Paris Gellar

Paris Geller has some tough moments and there are times when she couldn’t possibly be scarier or more intimidating. Once fans get to know her, though, she becomes a hilarious character who lives life on her own terms.

Whether yelling at strangers or analyzing her life, Paris has a harsh personality and that translates to a sense of humor, whether she thinks she has one or not. One of the funniest scenes between Paris and Rory is when Jamie asks Paris to go out with him and she didn’t even realize. Rory tells her what happened and Paris says, “Oh man, I finally get asked out on a date and I missed it. Was it a good ask-out?” Rory says it was and Paris says “God I wish I’d been there.” Paris has moments of innocence and those are always funny.

5 Sookie St. James

Although Sookie is a fairly uneven character, Melissa McCarthy brought so much humor to this role that Sookie has to be considered one of the funniest characters on Gilmore Girls.

Whether slamming pots around in the first season or coming up with a song about Dean’s favorite cookies, Sookie has many quirks and it’s always fun to watch her. She is especially hilarious when dealing with her one true love Jackson, as their relationship starts out with lots of witty banter since he’s the produce guy and she’s a chef. One of Sookie’s best moments is when Jackson says he wants to move in together and she thinks he’s joking. Sookie doesn’t always understand what’s going on as she lives in her own universe and it’s so charming.

4 Rory Gilmore

While Rory is her mother’s daughter and acts just like her on many occasions, she’s not quite as clever as her mom, although she can speak just as quickly.

Rory shines when she’s upset, whether yelling about being late for a test, hitting a deer, or Logan buying her a cart truck after they were having problems at Yale. Rory is super intelligent and that comes out when she’s speaking to both strangers and those close to her.

3 Luke Danes

Luke Danes would never say that he was funny. He doesn’t always laugh when others crack jokes or even pretend to understand what they’re talking about. But there’s something about his gruff personality and hatred of caffeine and junk food that is just so amusing.

Luke is a very passionate guy and he’s particularly funny when fighting with Kirk and Taylor Doose. Luke’s sometimes surly personality continues in the Netflix revival when he can’t grasp the concept of a fertility clinic.

2 Emily Gilmore

Emily Gilmore faces some tragedy, but she sure has a biting wit that never stops.

Emily is definitely the second funniest character on Gilmore Girls. While she’s just as terrifying as Paris, she simply can’t stop making jokes, and she’s so entertaining. From trying to make Friday Night Dinners perfect and attempting to bond with Rory the way that she couldn’t with her own daughter, Emily is an important part of the series. She will often make viewers laugh without even saying a word, like when she wears jeans in the revival.

1 Lorelai Gilmore

Of course, Lorelai Gilmore is the funniest character on Gilmore Girls. There is really no contest.

From the pilot, it’s clear that Lorelai is a force to be reckoned with. She jokes about everything under the sun, from coffee to dating to random objects, and she’s essentially always performing her own stand-up show. Even when dealing with a tough moment in life, like her difficult relationship with her mom and dad, Lorelai finds the humor. One of her best lines is when she has a unique order: “Cheeseburger, onion rings, and a list of people who killed their parents and got away with it. I’m looking for heroes.” Only Lorelai can put together words like this, and she makes cracks up everyone she knows.
