Dancing with the Stars contestant JoJo Siwa continued to make history for the show with a gender-breaking role for Disney Week. When it was revealed that the YouTube and TV personality would be joining season 30, fans also learned that she would be a part of DWTS’ first same-sex couple. JoJo was paired with pro dancer and DWTS season 26 champion Jenna Johnson. Jenna has embraced her first female partnership, and the couple has been getting high scores throughout this season.

DWTS fans were looking forward to Disney Week, especially since host Tyra Banks announced that it would take place over two nights. Monday’s show, titled Heroes Night, saw the stars and their partners take on a routine dedicated to beloved Disney characters, Tuesday’s show, titled Villains Night, saw the couples take on the not-so-lovable characters from Disney. There was some concern leading up to those performances when news spread that JoJo injured her knee in rehearsals. She and Jenna still performed, and the injury wasn’t addressed on the show.

On Monday’s episode of Dancing With The Stars, JoJo and Jenna danced a Viennese waltz to “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” from the 1950 animated movie Cinderella, as reported by the Daily Mail. JoJo broke the gender norm by playing Prince Charming, with Jenna as Cinderella. JoJo’s hair was in a tight bun, and she wore a military-style costume similar to Prince Charming’s. Jenna performed in a classic light blue ball gown. The couple received high praise from the judges. Head judge Len Goodman said, “It was beautifully danced. Your footwork was fantastic, and I loved watching you dance.” JoJo and Jenna also earned the first 9’s of the season, bringing their total score to 35 out of 40.

DWTS contestant JoJo surprised fans ahead of Disney Week by revealing that she had never seen Cinderella. This wasn’t the only challenge she would face, as all of the contestants were tasked with incorporating a new twist called The Mickey Mouse Challenge. Tyra announced this during the previous week’s episode with an animated clip of Mickey Mouse dance moves that the couples had to incorporate into their routines. Judge Bruno Tonioli reacted positively to JoJo and Jenna’s routine, mentioning the challenge in particular: “This is a Viennese waltz for the 21st century. Full of charm, grace, elegance and always so beautifully executed. And Mickey, come on, The Mickey Challenge added some extra magic to an already magical night.” JoJo and Jenna tied with couple Olivia Jade and Val Chmerkovskiy with a score of 35 on the judges’ leaderboard.

Not only has JoJo made DWTS history, but she’s proven to be a memorable contestant overall. Her experience as a dancer, pop star and TV personality make her an ideal star to appear on the show. Her passion, enthusiasm and commitment to the show is apparent. In a season filled with buzz surrounding positive COVID-19 tests and rumors that Olivia is getting special treatment, JoJo has garnered attention for the right reasons. Her mission to represent the LGBTQ+ community, combined with her talent, could be enough to win her season 30’s Mirrorball Trophy.

Dancing With The Stars airs Mondays at 8pm on ABC.
