DWTS Keo Motsepe Reveals Most Rewarding Aspect Of The Competition

There are many perks that come with appearing on Dancing With the Stars, from lavish costumes to fan recognition. But professional dancer Keo Motsepe’s favorite part is something more humble – helping his celebrity partner gain confidence. The majority of Keo’s pairings, including actress Anne Heche and Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch, have no ballroom dance experience prior to the competition. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Keo shared how rewarding it is to watch each woman recognize a newfound strength in themselves.

Keo never knows what his DWTS journey will be like until he opens the door and meets his partner for the first time. Each boasts a different personality and skill level, and Keo adapts his teaching method accordingly. In fact, when he was paired with singer Chaka Khan on DWTS season 21, he adjusted his entire schedule since she didn’t start her day until 11 pm. Over the course of the season, the professional dancers allow America to view the celebrities in a different light. A prime example is Evanna, who Keo made it to the final three with on season 27. No one expected quirky Ravenclaw Luna Lovegood to be a star ballroom dancer, but Keo helped her achieve that goal.

According to Keo, the two-minute dance viewers enjoy each Monday night on the live show is only a miniscule part of the DWTS process. His favorite moments happen behind the scenes, which is where his partner’s true confidence is gained. “It’s the time they spend with you in the room, rehearsals, you guys doing interviews, you teaching them about dancing and them listening and pushing themselves through those movements,” Keo told Screen Rant. There are countless times during rehearsal when the celebrity can’t grasp a difficult step or routine. “It’s like you’re speaking gibberish and she gets frustrated with herself,” he said. “But when the moment hits, it’s like a spark in their eyes. It’s a switch and they go, ‘Oh, that’s what you meant!,’ and then they glow. That’s the gain of confidence.”

As one of the most demanding reality TV shows, DWTS can take its mental and physical toll on both the celebrities and pro dancers. However, Keo said positive feedback from fans makes it all worthwhile. “They invest their emotions. I get DMs from fans telling me things like, ‘I’m not in a good place,’ and I’ll just say something to that person and they’re like, ‘Oh my God, you saved my life,’ or, ‘You saved how I view things,'” said Keo, who considers fans part of his chosen family. “You don’t understand the power that you have on your fans.”

For Keo, who experienced quite the culture shock when he moved from South Africa to Los Angeles in 2014, receiving such feedback for his childhood passion is a dream come true. “The pros, this is what we do. We’ve been doing this since we were young,” Keo said. “Dancing is our language.” Now, with Dancing With the Stars season 30 on the horizon, Keo said winning the coveted Mirrorball Trophy would be the “cherry on top.” The closest he came to winning the competition was with Evanna, and Keo believes he has what it takes to help his next partner, who he hopes is Friends star Courteney Cox, go all the way.
