Earths Justice League Replacement Arrive in DCeased

WARNING! SPOILERS FOR DCEASED: DEAD PLANET #2

In DCeased, the Anti-Life Equation infected millions of people on Earth which caused humanity to split up into two groups, one which took to the stars in hopes of finding a new planet to call home and the other which chose to stay on the desolate Earth in isolated sanctuaries. With the surviving heroes divided between the two groups, DCeased: Dead Planet #2 has revealed that during the five-year gap between the original series and its sequel a group of magic-based individuals has been responsible for protecting the living from the infected. Where there is no Justice League, the Shadowpact will protect what is left on Earth.

Although they make their DCeased debut in Dead Planet #2, the original Shadowpact was formed in 2005 by Detective Chimp, Ragman, and the Enchantress to resist the Spectre when he declared war on all magic within the DC Universe. With the addition of the Blue Devil, Nightshade, and Nightmaster, it was later revealed by their advisor The Phantom Stranger that they were the latest in a succession of mystic warriors under the same name who often championed lost causes. Shadowpact hasn’t been seen since the New 52 reboot in 2011 although, during James Tynion’s run of Justice League Dark, most of the original Shadowpact is present at Nightmaster’s funeral due to his demise in Dark Nights: Metal.

This version of Shadowpact is a bit more diverse as original members Blue Devil, Detective Chimp, and Ragman are joined by John Constantine, Zatanna, the Red Hood, and the Ravager. The first three are also making their DCeased debut while the remaining four (minus John and Zatanna who we saw at the bar in the previous issue) were last seen in Poison Ivy’s Gotham sanctuary at the end of the DCeased: Unkillables. With Constantine providing narration and short bio’s for everyone, we learn that the Shadowpact has been responsible for protecting and relocating people for the last five years.

One can only imagine the kind of horrors they’ve witnessed during that time but these magically empowered individuals make short work of the infected (or Anti-Living), with a little assist from Swamp Thing who has important news for John and the team.

After hearing Swamp Thing’s news, members of Shadowpact minus Jason Todd and Rose Wilson travel to Australia to investigate this second and apparently secret sanctuary where things go from bad to worse almost immediately. Writer Tom Taylor continues to reinforce the idea that no character, regardless of their popularity or powers, is safe from being infected and the stakes continue to be raised higher and higher over the overwhelming threat of the infected, especially now that a cure has been confirmed. The re-appearance of Shadowpact is a welcome throwback and one that makes sense. Earth always had a team of superheroes guarding it, even at the end of the world any surviving heroes would rise to the occasion and work together to fill that void. Hopefully, whatever members that survive, no pun intended considering the events within the issue itself, Shadowpact can work together with the remaining members of the Justice League and literally save the world from itself.
