Murphy starred in his first film 48 Hours in 1982. It was both a critical and financial success, leading to his appearance in other films. 10 Alien Stalkers

A man being chased around by aliens might not sound too funny initially, but Murphy gives it the comedic edge to make it work. In Bowfinger, Murphy plays Kit Ramsey, an actor who is unknowingly filmed for a movie about an alien invasion. Being filmed with hidden cameras, Ramsey believes that aliens are actually following him.

The film mocks celebrity culture and Hollywood as a whole, which sounds like the type of humor Murphy is comfortable with. Mocking celebrities is a type of humor Murphy often embraced, so it isn’t surprising the film would take this stance. The absurd premise coupled with Murphy’s frantic reactions as Ramsey makes this one of the funniest things in his movies.

9 The Ol’ Swictheroo

Comedians can often be funny on their own, but when they have someone that complements them (and they themselves can complement), it creates a new level of enjoyment. This happens in Trading Places, when con artist Billy Valentine (played by Murphy) switches roles with successful businessman Louis Winthorpe III (played by Dan Aykroyd).

Granted, plenty of movies have used the “swapping places” trope without Murphy’s involvement. But none of them have had the swapped characters team up to stop orange juice embezzlement, and celebrate with lobster and cracked crab on a tropical beach. When the characters work together, they demonstrate how Murphy and Aykroyd play well enough off one another to give the film its unique voice.

8 Rolling Stone Magazine’s Axel Foley

In Beverly Hills Cop, Murphy’s character Axel Foley tries to stay at a hotel without making a reservation. When the receptionist looks and doesn’t see his name on the register, he complains how he had an important interview with Michael Jackson, and suggests the hotel might be racist for not accepting him.

What makes the scene hilarious is Murphy’s comedic timing. When he doesn’t get the hotel room, he is hysterical. But when he does get it and is told how expensive it will be, he pauses before complying. The whole scene demonstrates that Murphy understands the balance between calm and loud humor.

7 Thieves In Training

While Tower Heist features a comedic cast of Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, and Casey Affleck, it is agreed among most fans that Eddie Murphy steals the show. In the film, Murphy plays the character Slide, who is a thief and a criminal. The other characters want to perform a heist, so they bring Slide to help.

Every scene Murphy’s in, he nails the comedy, from when he’s teaching the crew to break open doors with bobby pins, to when he double-crosses them to take the money for himself. It’s truly a priceless turn of events and few other than Murphy could make it as entertaining.

6 Puss & Donkey Duet

Shrek 2 one of the funniest sequels DreamWorks has made. Every character can manage to get a laugh, from Shrek and Donkey’s adventure with Puss to the Fairy Godmother and her son, Prince Charming. The cherry on top of the adventure is the concert held at the end by Puss and Donkey.

The absurdity of a donkey and cat singing together is funny enough itself, but what makes it stand out is their impressive vocals. Murphy and Antonio Banderas sound very well together, which is an additional treat. With the characters dancing along, hilarity and unity can truly be felt.

5 Making Waffles

Keeping the Shrek momentum, the original film offers funny moments after nearly two decades, especially with Donkey. When Shrek first meets Donkey, Donkey is ecstatic to get to know him, while he would rather have nothing to do with the talkative steed. Their relationship blossoms from funny and apart to still funny, but more connected.

Not only are Shrek and Donkey’s banters and comments to one another hilarious, but it’s funny how a jaded ogre and an extroverted donkey get along at all. They realize that though they have differences, they also have similarities in being outcasts. The Shrek series shows that Murphy can work in both heartfelt and comedic moments.

4 The Average Man

As already stated, one of Murphy’s specialties in comedy is impressions. In Coming to America, he’s acting as Prince Akeem, the rich prince from Africa, who is acting like the average man from New York, or at least he’s trying to. This is a type of situation that Murphy makes his own in the film.

In the film, Murphy embraces Akeem, a person who is used to a rich and pampered lifestyle, having to adjust to a common lifestyle. Actors embrace their roles all the time, but Akeem’s charisma, personality, and entertaining fish-out-of-water routine are all presented by Murphy.

3 The Signifying Monkey

Probably the crudest entry on the list is the Signifying Monkey bit from Dolemite Is My Name. In the film, Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore, a man who desperately wants to perform comedy. One day, Moore goes to a comedy club and tells a funny (and raunchy) story called the Signifying Monkey.

This comedic event can only happen in one of Murphy’s films because he’s been in Moore’s position in real life. Like Moore, he was once the comedian slowly climbing up to the top. Most comedians have to make this climb, as well, but Murphy’s additional understanding of Moore as a person truly makes this a unique take.

2 Guardian Dragon

Every Disney character could use a comedic companion here and there. Simba has Timon and Pumbaa, Lightning McQueen has Mater, and Mulan has Mushu. In Mulan, Murphy plays Mushu, a guardian spirit who has to guide Mulan through her perilous journey. Mushu brings a type of levity throughout the film that represents Murphy’s distinctive voice.

Mushu is unlike many other funny Disney companions in that he’s with Mulan from the beginning of her journey straight through to the end. Being the comic relief, Mushu’s funny moments are woven within the film, making a unique experience that only Murphy could provide.

1 Unlikely Partners

Multiple films on this list have had Eddie Murphy team up with someone who may not have seemed like his ideal counterpart at first. Multiple films also have seen him as a criminal or police officer. Where both of those began for his career is in 48 Hours.

In 48 Hours, Murphy plays Reggie Hammond, a criminal who teams up with detective Jack Cates (played by Nick Nolte) in the hopes of catching another criminal. Cates is a tough and serious cop, while Hammond is a flippant, wise-cracking ally. This is something funny that can only happen in Murphy’s movies because this was a formative role for him. Nothing will probably have more of Murphy’s signature on it than this role.
