FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has revealed its large open-world map and its Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-like beacons. Since its announcement over two years ago, Elden Ring quickly became one of the most anticipated games of the new console generation. Initially slated for a release in January 2022, Elden Ring was recently delayed five weeks to February 25, 2022. To ease the disappointment, an Elden Ring Closed Network Test was announced for November 12, and more gameplay has now been shown in an official stream.

With a world crafted with assistance from Game of Thrones author George R.R Martin, Elden Ring is an evolution of the Soulslike genre that FromSoftware started with the original Demon’s Souls. The game’s Lands Between is the first free-roaming open-world map the developer has made. Mounts will be available to aid in navigating the large map, and players can jump with and without their mounts, adding a level of verticality similar to that of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

During Thursday’s Elden Ring preview stream, publisher Bandai Namco and FromSoftware shared 19 minutes of new Elden Ring gameplay footage. At one point in the stream, a first-ever look at the game’s map was given. The map can be marked with specific symbols to indicate the locations of crafting supplies, enemies, and dungeons, and players can also place beacons on the map that are reflected in the game world. Like in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, beacons are meant to help maintain a sense of direction of where to go in the world, as there’s no mini-map or compass marking waypoint.

While the map itself has topographical detail of locations – such as castles or a large forest – it lacks indicators of what specifically will be found in areas. This feature adds a level of immersion to the game that other open-world games often forego in favor maps cluttered with objectives and quests. FromSoftware says Elden Ring’s open-world watchtowers to help find new locations on the map too. Like Ubisoft’s signature open-world games, Elden Ring’s towers can be sued to mark dungeons and other locations on the map.

This gameplay preview shared many of the mechanics players can try out themselves in Elden Ring’s Closed Network Test, which runs from November 12 – 14. FromSoftware says more information about the game before its February release will be shared, though the developer did not mention specifics. Hopefully, the next look at Elden Ring will include a preview of more dungeons or hints about the overall story of the game world.
