FromSoftware has revealed five Elden Ring character classes that will be playable in the game’s closed network test on November 12. The developer is well-regarded for creating the Soulslike genre, but its next release will translate this signature style of gameplay and world-building into an open-world setting. A recent Elden Ring gameplay preview showed off more of the highly anticipated adventure, including exploration, multiplayer, and combat gameplay.

Since Demon’s Souls’ release in 2009, FromSoftware has continued to evolve the Soulslike genre while maintaining its core pillars of difficulty and elusive lore. After Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice limited players to a single signature sword and a preset protagonist, Elden Ring will once again embrace the RPG elements of its Dark Souls predecessors. The epic fantasy game will boast a range of different weapons and magical spells for players to wield, allowing them to tailor-make their playstyles. The recent gameplay preview also revealed Elden Ring’s large map and in-world beacons, giving a clearer idea of the game world’s size and scope.

In a new tweet, the official Elden Ring account has revealed 4K character models of five playable character classes, all of which can be chosen during the upcoming playtest. Classes and builds were a Dark Souls trilogy design staple, and Elden Ring’s classes look fittingly unique with their striking designs. The curved sword-wielding Warrior appears to be a dexterous melee build, while the Enchanted Knight is clad in heavy armor and carries a magic staff rather than a sword and shield. The blind Prophet class has a shield and a large club, and wears a peculiar wheel around its neck. The Champion looks to be a strength-based melee class, sporting little armor and holding a massive axe. Finally, the Bloody Wolf fights with a sword and shield and is dressed in light, very cool-looking, armor. These classes will be available during Elden Ring’s closed network test, which will allow select players to test the game from November 12 – 14.

Elden Ring’s recent 20-minute gameplay video demonstrated a multitude of new and returning features. It also included a substantial look at several NPCs, such as the boisterous living pot Alexander and the mysterious (but seemingly friendly) figure Melina. Many aspects of combat seem to have been improved compared to past FromSoftware titles, with Elden Ring’s gameplay preview showing off visually spectacular magic abilities and what appear to be precise close-quarters combat hitboxes. The title’s open world-design, complete with a map and bosses that can ambush players as they explore, could help the game to stand out among its predecessors.

By revisiting and revitalizing aspects of past Soulsborne games, Elden Ring looks to improve upon Dark Souls based on what’s been shown so far. This improvement seems to extend to Elden Ring’s character classes, which are all recognizable and look as though they can support very different playstyles. Lucky players will be able to explore these classes during November 12’s Elden Ring network test.
