Elden Ring Will Let You Fast Travel From Anywhere In Open World

Elden Ring will allow players to fast travel to save points from anywhere in the overworld, provided they aren’t in danger. The FromSoftware Soulsborne games use a save point and hub system, where saving heals the character, but this also revives any non-boss monsters that were slain before the save point was visited.

The ability to fast travel in the Soulsborne games was originally limited. In Demon’s Souls, the player had to return to the Nexus in order to visit specific save points. In Dark Souls, the player didn’t gain the ability to fast travel until late in the game, which is a shame, as it would have saved a lot of backtracking if it were available from the start. In Dark Souls 2, the player could fast travel from any bonfire, and this feature was retained in Dark Souls 3, as well as in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Bloodborne didn’t allow fast travel from checkpoints, forcing the player to return to the Hunter’s Dream instead.

It seems that fast travel will be easier to use than ever before in Elden Ring. According to the Washington Post, players will be able to fast travel to save points, like Elden Ring’s version of Firelink Shrine, from anywhere on the world map. The only caveat is that players cannot fast travel when they’re in danger, such as when facing an enemy in combat, so it can’t be used to escape from a situation where their character is about to die.

This change to how fast travel works is likely to bring up the old argument about video game difficulty, as the ability to zip back to a save point at any time outside of combat will make things a lot easier. It sounds like it’s a feature that’s more about making things less frustrating, especially if the overworld of Elden Ring is as big as it seems in the trailers. Elden Ring is meant to have a vast open world, and racing back to save points in order to fast travel is something that could quickly grow tiresome.

The fast travel in Elden Ring sounds like it will be similar to the system used in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which made exploring that game’s vast overworld much easier. Players who want to eschew fast travel and see the game world for themselves aren’t obligated to use this feature, and they can explore Elden Ring from the back of their steed if they so choose.
