The director of the Russian Space Agency and SpaceX’s Elon Musk were never the best of friends but now they seem to be on good terms. Russia and the US lead operations of the International Space Station (ISS). Since the Space Shuttle was decommissioned in 2011, all flights to and from the ISS have been done on Russian spacecraft.
The SpaceX Crew Dragon began flying to the ISS in 2019 delivering supplies and scientific payload. Recently the Dragon Crew delivered US astronauts to the ISS. It was the first time in years that US astronauts were launched from US territory out into space.
Dimitry Rogozin, Director of the Russian Space Agency took everyone by surprise when he tweeted that a Russian astronaut would be flying to the ISS on a SpaceX Dragon Crew. The mission will launch in autumn 2022 and carry Anya Kikina, a Russian cosmonaut to the ISS. Dimitry said it was part of the “cross-flights cooperation” that exists between Roscosmos and NASA. In return, NASA will include a US astronaut on a Russian space flight.
Space Diplomacy 101: Playing All Sides
Russia and US political tensions have affected the space program several times with Russia threatening to leave the ISS program if sanctions against Russia weren’t lifted. “After analyzing the sanctions against our space industry, I suggest to the USA to bring their astronauts to the International Space Station using a trampoline,” the space director Dmitry Rogozin once said. SpaceX ended the leverage of the Russian Space Agency and its monopoly over getting astronauts to the ISS. When SpaceX finally got the Dragon capsule to the ISS Musk tweeted, “The trampoline is working,” responding directly to Rogozin. Since then both have crossed swords more than once.
Many media questioned why Russia is coming around and creating new bonds with the US private space even knowing that the ISS station is expected to end its days in 2028. The answer may not be as complex as expected. Russia has been launching and docking new modules to the ISS. This year it docked the Nakau module and the Prichal module. Both modules were originally designed to be part of a new space station. Russia could very well be building a new space station using the ISS while China and the US build stations from scratch.
Russia has also recently expressed admiration praising US private companies including SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic. Russia has space agreements and cooperates with China, Europe, and India. They also know that the US private space industry is a strong player. Projects like SpaceX’s Starship, reusable rockets, and even space tourism are pushing innovation to new heights. In a smart move, Russia is playing all sides to secure a presence in space. At the time this story was being published Musk had not responded to Rogozin.
