Elseworlds Will Set-Up A New Batwoman Television Series
Elseworlds will introduce the character of Batwoman into the Arrowverse, leading to a spin-off series starring Ruby Rose as Batwoman/Kate Kane. In the comics, Kate Kane was an ex-soldier forced to resign her commission after her relationship with a fellow female cadet at West Point was exposed. A close encounter with the Dark Knight after he came to her rescue during a mugging, only to find she had already subdued her attacker, inspired Kate to become a vigilante. With her father’s help, Kate took up the mantle of Batwoman, not learning until later that her cousin Bruce Wayne was Batman! It is believed (but not yet confirmed) that Bruce Wayne and Batman will not exist in the reality of the Batwoman show and that this version of Kate Kane will be taking up the mantle independently.

Tyler Hoechlin Will Reprise His Role As Superman
Tyler Hoechlin first appeared as Clark Kent/Superman during the second season of Supergirl, helping his cousin to repel the invasion of the Daxamites after briefly falling under the control of the Daxamite queen, Rhea. The Man of Steel has not been seen on the show since the second season finale, though references have been made to him being elsewhere in the world dealing with various natural disasters during Supergirl’s third season. He will be appearing in all three episodes of Elseworlds.

Elseworlds Will Introduce Elizabeth Tulloch As Lois Lane
Lois Lane has often been mentioned in Supergirl, with her father General Sam Lane having been an antagonist during the first season and Kara Danvers’ boss Cat Grant having a rivalry with the reporter during her time at The Daily Planet. She was also established as having a romantic relationship with Clark Kent in Supergirl’s second season, though it is unknown at this time if she is aware of his secret identity. It seems a safe bet she does know that Clark Kent is Superman, however, as Clark is too honest to keep secrets from his girlfriend and Lois should be a good enough detective to figure out the truth. In either case, Lois Lane will be making her first appearance in the flesh in Elseworlds, played by Grimm star Elizabeth Tulloch.

Cassandra Jean Amell Will Be Playing Nora Fries
Cassandra Jean Amell, best known for playing Missy on One Tree Hill, has been cast in the role of Nora Fries. She is also the wife of Arrow star Stephen Amell. In the comics, Nora Fries is the wife of Dr. Victor Fries – the man who would become the super-villain Mr. Freeze after a lab-accident exposed him to the cryogenic chemicals he was using to preserve his wife until he could find a cure for the fatal disease that threatened her life. Nothing has been said about Mr. Freeze appearing in Elseworlds, so it’s possible the character is being introduced as part of the supporting cast for Batwoman or to set up the villain’s introduction later in that series.

Jeremy Davies Will Play The Main Villain, Dr. John Deegan
Jeremy Davies, best known for his work on Lost and Justified, will be playing Elseworlds’ main villain – Dr. John Deegan. Davies is renowned for his work playing a variety of unnerving and crazed characters, so he seems well cast given that Dr. Deegan is described as a doctor at Arkham Asylum who is as crazy as his patients. It is unknown if Dr. Deegan is an original character or not, though one fan theory suggests the name might be an alias for recurring Batman villain and sinister psychiatrist, Dr. Hugo Strange. It has also been speculated that the name might be an expansion on Dr. John Dee – the secret identity of the telepathic villain Doctor Destiny in the comics.

LaMonica Garrett Will Play The Monitor, Mar Novu
LaMonica Garrett, best known for his work on Designated Survivor, has been cast in the role of Mar Novu (aka The Monitor). Described as an “extraterrestrial being of infinite power,” it is unknown if he will be a friend or foe of the Arrowverse’s heroes. The odds seem fair that he will be an ally, as a being known only as The Monitor helped the heroes of many worlds battle the sinister Anti-Monitor in the comic book crossover event Crisis On Infinite Earths.

The Significance Of The Name Elseworlds
There is a special significance to the title Elseworlds being used for the 2018 Arrowverse crossover. Elseworlds is the name of a imprint DC Comics devised for stories that are set outside the main continuity of the DC Comics multiverse, typically placing their heroes in another time period. Such was the case with Gotham By Gaslight, the first official Elseworlds story, which explored the idea of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman in Victorian times. Other stories were based around alternate realities created by a change to past events, such as in Batman: Holy Terror, where aspiring priest Bruce Wayne becomes Batman in a world ruled by a brutal Christian theocracy. Still other Elseworlds, such as Kingdom Come, explored possible futures of the DC Multiverse. This, coupled with the presence of The Monitor, suggests that the Arrowverse crossover (and possibly the world of Batwoman) may be set in one of these divergent realities outside of the 53 separate universes said to make up The Arrowverse.

The Story Of Elseworlds
What few details have been gleaned about the story of Elseworlds have come from the casting announcements of what characters are involved in the story. Curiously, despite the implications of the title, Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim says that the story will take place in the current continuity and timeline of The Arrowverse. Arrow star Stephen Amell has also said that the story of Elseworlds will include a greater focus on the interactions between the characters and less end-of-the-world action sequences than the previous Arrowverse crossover events.

Elseworlds Posters
Two posters so far have been released for Elseworlds. The first poster was released to announce the dates on which the crossover event would be airing, and depicts The Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl with a Bat-Signal baring Batwoman’s red bat-logo in the background.
The second poster, which coincided with the announcement that the 2018 Arrowverse crossover event would be titled Elseworlds, depicts the same red Bat-Signal over the skies of Gotham City. Lest there be any doubt that this is, in fact, Gotham City, Wayne Tower – the base of operations for Wayne Enterprises – is clearly visible in the middle of the skyline.
