Encanto star Stephanie Beatriz, the voice of Mirabel, was in labor when she recorded “Waiting on a Miracle.”

Beatriz didn’t want to tell anyone at Disney that she was that far along in labor because she didn’t want them to freak out, according to Variety. “But I was already having some contractions when we were scheduled to record that day. I was like ‘Well, fingers crossed I finish the song before [the baby] comes!'” she explained.

Beatriz gave birth the day after recording “Waiting on a Miracle.” The irony of singing a song about desperately needing the arrival of a miracle while the actor was actually in labor was not lost. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote “Waiting on a Miracle,” joked that Beatriz was singing the song while waiting for her own personal miracle.

“We knew she was very, very, very, very ready to have that baby. But she did not tell us she was almost, almost ready,” said director Byron Howard.

Beatriz was originally auditioning for a different role in Encanto. After Howard and fellow director Jared Bush heard her sing an energetic version of “You’re Welcome” from Moana, they decided to cast her as the lead. The part of Mirabel took years to record and at least 15 dialogue sessions in addition to recording sessions for the musical numbers.

“Waiting on a Miracle” needed an emotionally wrenching performance from Beatriz since Mirabel is suffering a secret inner-turmoil during the attached scene. As the odd-girl-out, the only one born into La Familia Madrigal who doesn’t later receive a magical gift, Mirabel expresses her heartbreak at feeling alone. She struggles through watching her little cousin receive a gift and her family’s concern that he will turn out like Mirabel. The emotion can be summed up in the line, “I’m not fine, I’m not fine.”

Beatriz has an impressive history of roles, with Encanto being one of the more recent. Among other films and television series, the actor has also starred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Short Term 12 and In the Heights. Her voice roles include parts on Family Guy, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Central Park, and she recently voiced Batwoman in the DC animated film Catwoman: Hunted.

While it’s unknown if Disney will produce a sequel to Encanto, several Disney films are scheduled for release this year, including the Disney/Pixar film Lightyear. This science-fiction adventure will finally bring fans the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the Space Ranger that inspired the beloved action figure toy by the same name in Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story.
