Endgame Almost Killed All 6 Original Avengers

All six original Avengers could’ve died in Avengers: Endgame originally. After originally coming together in 2012, the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought the original Avengers together one last time following the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War. Plenty of viewers were surprised to see Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) all survive Thanos’ snap, but it allowed for them to unite again to save the entire universe.

Although Avengers: Endgame brought all of the original Avengers back together, it was widely believed that this would be the last time it happens. The Phase 3 MCU movie confirmed that this is accurate (barring some multiverse mayhem) as it killed multiple of them. Black Widow was the first one to die, as she sacrificed herself on Vormir so the Avengers could obtain the Soul Stone and have a fighting chance at saving the universe. It was then Iron Man’s turn to go, as he used the Infinity Stones to wipe out Thanos’ army and save the world. Both of these deaths hit fans hard, but Avengers: Endgame’s ending could’ve been even bleaker.

Marvel Studios spent years developing Avengers: Endgame with directors Anthony and Joe Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and that included floating multiple ideas around for what could happen. Some elements were clearly going to happen early on, but other details were ironed out during the development process. It turns out that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige originally proposed that all of the original Avengers should die according to The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Kevin’s initial pitch was that it was Toy Story 3 – a ‘they’re all gonna jump into a furnace together’ concept,’ reveals Joe Russo. The brothers’ pushback was that there was no possible way for the story to be able to take the time to celebrate each one of them. And that, for the fans, it was an impossible scenario to walk out of the theater and process.

The idea of Avengers: Endgame killing all six original Avengers is a crazy thought to consider, especially in a Toy Story 3 style scenario. Killing the MCU’s six biggest characters in a single movie would’ve been gutsy and completely unpredictable, but no one would’ve thought it could happen all at once either. It’s impossible to imagine Avengers: Endgame sticking the landing on such an idea, which is why the Russo brothers were against such an idea. There’s almost no way the movie could handle such a moment and give each character a proper sendoff. That would mean viewers could leave the film feeling disappointed, confused, and upset.

Since Avengers: Endgame didn’t bring this idea to the screen, it allowed the movie to make sure Iron Man’s death hit audiences emotionally and left room for Captain America to get his own happy ending. It also gives the MCU a chance to give the rest of the original Avengers a better sendoff whenever their time comes. Black Widow’s death was already expanded on in Black Widow with Yelena Belova visiting Natasha Romanoff’s grave. That leaves Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye to have their MCU stories wrapped up, with Clint Barton’s death theorized to come in Hawkeye. Should these characters eventually die, they’ll get the spotlight they deserve instead of a crowded one Avengers: Endgame nearly delivered.
