Hanna’s season 2 is now on Amazon. The thriller series is based off Joe Wright’s 2011 film of the same name, revolving around a young girl (now played by Esme Creed-Miles) with enhanced abilities who is attempting to outrun the CIA and whatever plans they have in store for her.

At the end of the first season, Hanna learned that other girls at the Meadows facility were quite literally cut from the same cloth as her. Now she’s taken refuge in the forest with fellow warrior woman Clara (Yasmin Monet Prince) as they await their next steps. The two young actresses spoke with Screen Rant about their onscreen dynamic and shocking turns in their character development in anticipation of the premiere.

Season one blew me away with the way it ended, and we pick up right where we left off in season two. Esme, can you talk to me about how Hanna takes care of Clara the same way that Erik took care of her. Can you talk to me about the similarities of those relationships?

Esme Creed-Miles: I think that’s really spot on. Yeah, there’s a lot of similarities there, and I think that’s a way that Hanna is dealing with the grief that she feels. I think it’s a way to create a sense of control for her, because grief makes you feel out of control. And rightly so, Clara wants to experience the world the same way that Hanna did when she was in the forest.

In season two, things are obviously a lot different. There’s a lot of new characters we get introduced to. In what ways do you think Hanna and Clara have changed from season one to season two?

Yasmin Monet Prince: I would say Clara has changed a lot, in terms of just understanding who she is and understanding who she wants to be, personality-wise. Having an opinion: who is this Clara? What does she like, apart from the fact that Meadows is creating a character for her? I think you still see elements of her [season one self, though].

The whole Meadows thing is so intriguing to me, and there’s so many new characters there. One of the characters that Clara interacts with quite often is Leo Gardner, and also Sandy and Jules. What is your opinion on them?

Yasmin Monet Prince: I think she’s just really trying to understand why they want to pretend so much. I think because she also had a little bit of a rebellious streak within her in season one, she’s a bit like, “Why?” Every day is like, “Why?” She’s questioning; she’s been questioning things. And I think Hanna definitely helps her to expand that and challenge those people.

The thing is Hanna doesn’t necessarily trust anybody; at least she hadn’t for a long time. Esme, can you talk to me about the relationship or even trust factor that she has with Weigler this season? Because Marissa seems like she’s trying her best to help Hannah along the way. Talk to me about how the relationship is kind of developing in season two.

Esme Creed-Miles: It’s fascinating how they go from archenemies to a sort of mother and daughter dynamic almost. And I really enjoyed working with Mireille, because she’s an incredible actress. And I think what was really interesting about that dynamic is how they truly have the ability to kill each other if they wanted, so there’s a huge element of trust that goes into just the two of them sitting in a car together. That tension is palpable, and really comes to a head in that scene with them in the truck – which I love.

Hanna risked it all at the end of season one to save her friend Clara. Talk to me about the bond that these two have.

Esme Creed-Miles: I think that for Hanna, she’s never met someone who can understand and empathize with her experience in that way, because they did come literally from the same place. So, I think the bond is quite sisterly.

Hanna’s outlook seems to have changed just a little bit too, because she’s found a sister in Clara, who has also been genetically altered. Can you talk to me about about Hanna wanting to go into the Meadows facility? What are her thoughts about the Meadows facility?

Esme Creed-Miles: I think she is aware that UTRAX is the bad guy. I think she has an awareness of that, beyond what the other girls [do]. And she sees it for what it is: a simulation. Purely because of her experiences of the real world that the other girls have not had.

Did you both sit down and talk to [David Farr] about the progression of your characters from season one to season two, and even beyond that? Without giving any spoilers away, of course.

Yasmin Monet Prince: No, I think all of it was an element of surprise. I think especially for my character, who is such a blank canvas that every day when we got a script, it was like “Clara’s learning herself as well.” There was no backstory to it; there was no research into what she should be. So, it wasn’t really about a discussion; it would be what happens on the day, to be honest.

Is there any development that truly shocked you with your characters?

Yasmin Monet Prince: I think the only thing that shocked me is, near the end of the season, how desperate Clara gets and how that affects her personality. The decisions that she makes, and how she reacts to people. I think that was quite shocking.

How about for yourself, Esme? Was there anything this season that truly shocked you about your character?

Esme Creed-Miles: I was shocked by her sheer perseverance to save Clara, despite the repeated betrayal. She sticks around, and I was surprised by that.

Talk to me about your opinion on the new character, Carmichael, because he’s such a fascinating character that throws a wrench into everyone’s plans.

Yasmin Monet Prince: I think his character is fascinating because you don’t realize he is the bad guy. He doesn’t play the bad guy. He’s almost like the nice man that comes along with the team. You don’t expect anything from him; you don’t expect an evil bone in his body. You just think he’s a nice teacher, really. And he doesn’t have anything vindictive to say or do so. So, yeah.
