ESRB Rates Phoenix Point For Xbox And PS4 Suggesting New Platforms Soon

From X-COM creator Julian Gallop, Phoenix Point combines tactical turn-based combat with a Lovecraft inspired horror aesthetic. It was supposed to release simultaneously on the Epic Game Store, Microsoft Store, and Xbox Game Pass. However, the game was mysteriously absent from Game Pass at launch. Snapshot Games later announced it was delaying the Xbox version indefinitely.

While Phoenix Point came to Stadia this January, there has been no word from the developer on the Xbox release. That may be about to change, though, as the ESRB recently updated its website to include a “T” rating for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Phoenix Point.

The page itself is nothing more than a dry summary of the game, focusing on anything parents might want to be aware of. It mainly just describes the level of violence and ends abruptly with the news that some characters in the game say “sh*t.” None of it is anything Phoenix Point fans do not already know. However, the page’s existence means that the ESRB has seen and had time to consider an at least partially complete version of Phoenix Point’s console port. And while this is far from a confirmed release window, it shows that Snapshot Games is making progress on the delayed PlayStation and Xbox versions.

In addition to the ESRB rating, recent activity on the Snapshot Games Forum may point to a console release in the foreseeable future. On March 19th, 2020, the Phoenix Point Twitter account shared a link to a post on the Forum. In it, a member of the Phoenix Point team informed fans of the Xbox port’s delay. They attributed the postponement to performance issues and were unable to give a specific release window. There has been nothing official since then regarding the Xbox One release.

However, scrolling down to the most recent post reveals something interesting. According to a member by the name of Wormerine, “No ETA, but the recent email mentioned they would talk about it more soon, as well as about the upcoming DLC. Unfortunately, I deleted the email already, so can’t share details word for word.” It’s unclear who Wormerine is or where they are getting this insider information from. However, they appear to be considered a trusted source within the Phoenix Point fan community.

Granted, fans were probably hoping for something more substantial than ESRB ratings and anonymous sources. Unfortunately, given the scarcity of official comments, there is not much else to go on. The studio is clearly doing something behind the scenes, but it’s unlikely anyone outside of Snapshot Games knows the specifics. Xbox and PlayStation fans will just need to be patient and wait for more news on the upcoming port.

Phoenix Point is available on PC and Stadia. PS4 and Xbox One versions are in development.
