Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for The Flash, season 6, episode 14, “Death of the Speed Force.”
Season 6, episode 14 of The Flash confirmed that Atlantis exists in the new reality of Earth-Prime. The location is referenced by Cisco in the episode “The Death of the Speed Force.” Unfortunately, for those hoping for an Aquaman cameo, Cisco didn’t say much about the location, other than the fact that the fish smell sticks to your clothes for a while after a visit.
Atlantis is a place of great importance in the DC Comics universe. In ancient times, it was home to a magically advanced city-state unlike any the world had seen before or since. It was this magic that allowed its inhabitants to survive when the island nation sank to the ocean floor, transforming them into an amphibious species able to survive the pressures of the ocean depths. In modern times, Atlantis is also one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, though how friendly they are to surface-dwellers is largely dependent on the ruler. In the current DC Comics universe, Atlantis is made up of seven different kingdoms, making up a number of sunken societies.
The revelation that Atlantis is real and exists on Earth-Prime came from Cisco Ramon, who returned home after an extensive journey around the globe, chronicling the differences between the Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis realities. Amusingly, his arrival coincided with that of another Team Flash member, Wally West, and Cisco inadvertently crashed Wally’s homecoming party. When everyone expressed surprise at his sudden return, Cisco explained that all the homesickness after weeks of anomaly hunting was starting to catch-up with him and he needed to “wash all of the Atlantean fish smell off of these clothes.”
Atlantis was previously confirmed to exist in the pre-Crisis Arrowverse, albeit in the alternate reality of Earth-2. In this reality, the island didn’t seem to have sunk, as reference was made to it being accessible by airplane. It was also apparently a popular attraction for tourists, as the Earth-2 version of Barry Allen bought his parents tickets to fly to Atlantis as an anniversary present. The Earth-2 version of Iris West was also said to have some family living in Atlantis, suggesting that it was far from the xenophobic nation sometimes portrayed in the comics.
Even if the new version of Atlantis isn’t a sunken city of legend and merely a large island nation with an unfortunate smell, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see it in The Flash. Warner Bros. remains ever-protective of mixing its film and television properties to alleviate confusion among casual fans and with an Aquaman sequel on the way, there seems little chance of Jason Momoa showing up in STAR Labs asking for help from the surface-dwelling scientists. It seems likely this was just a one-off gag, similar to the confirmation of Themyscira’s existence on Legends of Tomorrow.
