The Jokers Daughter Was Just Redeemed in DC Comics

DC Comics’ team of anti-hero crime fighters known as The Outlaws has officially disbanded. With Bizarro newly crowned the King of Hell and Artemis breaking off her undefined relationship with Jason Todd, Red Hood and the Outlaws has been rebranded to simply Red Hood in issue #51. But while the long-running series finds this motley confederation of misfits going their separate ways, Red Hood and the Outlaws must complete one final mission before disbanding. Jason Todd must rescue and rehabilitate the villainous “offspring” of the man who killed him.

In the midst of Gotham City’s deadly Joker War, Red Hood and the Outlaws have taken up residence in Ma Gunn’s original School for Wayward Boys. When Jason realizes that he has been followed to the decaying orphanage by an army of the Joker’s mask-wearing acolytes, he triggers a timed self-destruct sequence and begins to fight his way out. Just as he is about to make his escape, Red Hood hears the sound of crowbar on bone coming from upstairs. In the last few seconds before a massive explosion, Punchline and a brainwashed Dick Grayson bring Jason Todd face-to-face with a horrifying reenactment of the events that killed him.

Duela Dent is a psychopathic teenage Joker fan who ran away from her happy suburban household and took up residence in the sewers of Gotham City. In Batman: the Dark Knight #23.4, she repurposes the Joker’s cut-off face as a mask and dubs herself the Joker’s Daughter. While Jason initially believes that Duela died in the explosion, he subsequently learns that the body in the wreckage was that of a homeless woman kidnapped and killed by Punchline. After rescuing Duela from the Joker’s minions, Jason enlists Dr. Shay Veritas and Suzie Su to physically and mentally rehabilitate her. Once healed, Joker’s Daughter tries her hand at crime fighting alongside the Outlaws, but eventually decides she wants to go home to her real mom and dad.

The recently released Red Hood and the Outlaws #50 was written by Scott Lobdell with art by Paolo Pantalena and Arif Prianto. Gerry Conway and Don Newton created Jason Todd for 1983’s Batman #357. Jason became Batman’s second Robin after Dick Grayson vacated the mantle and established himself as Nightwing the following year. In the “Death in the Family” four-part story in 1988, Jason was brutally murdered by the Joker in a manner very similar to the way Punchline crowbarred and blew up Duela. He didn’t reappear until 2005’s Batman: Under the Hood. Joker’s Daughter was created by Bob Rozakis and Irv Novick for Batman Family #6 in 1976.

Lingering guilt over the recent death of Roy Harper may have motivated Red Hood and the Outlaws to redeem one of Joker’s most traumatized victims. Certainly unresolved trauma from Jason’s own death and resurrection must have factored in. Either way, the dissolution of the Outlaws once again finds Jason Todd alone. He will inevitably have to work through his past without any help from Bruce, Bizarro, Starfire, or even Artemis. At least he was able to teach Duela Dent a lesson he is still learning himself: “Sometimes revenge is a dish best served not at all.”
