Estelle Harris has perhaps one of the most recognizable voices in television and film. Shrill and piercing, it is identifiable in an instant. 10 The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody (2005), 6.4

Bringing her signature, curmudgeonly charm to Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Harris portrayed the character of one of the employees of the Tipton Hotel. Somewhat surprisingly, Muriel is actually fairly good-natured, though it isn’t unknown for her to be a little snappy and to refuse to clean up a mess that she didn’t make. First appearing in the episode “Hotel Hangout,” she appears sporadically throughout the series, with her last appearance being in the episode “Mr. Tipton Comes to Visit,” in which she saves the jobs of her fellow employees.

9 Promoted (2015), 6.5

Estelle Harris’s appearance in this film as Sylvia reveals just how multi-faceted she is as an actress, and how she manages to steal the show every time that she appears. It’s rather hard to summarize a film like Promoted, which is something of a screwball comedy and a bit of a romantic comedy. The film received quite a lot of bad press, from audiences and critics alike, but one of its saving graces is Harris. No matter what she appears in, she goes on to prove that is capable of lifting up even the worst material.

8 Brother Bear (2003), 6.8

This Disney film, coming after the glorious heights of the Disney Renaissance, was something of a comedown for the company. The film tells the story of a young Native Canadian man who is magically transformed into a bear and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. It is truly a beautiful film to watch, though it didn’t make nearly as much money at the box office as some of its predecessors and was met with a mixed critical reaction. Unsurprisingly, Harris portrays an old lady bear with her usual mix of snap and charm.

7 What’s Cooking (2000), 6.9

This comedy drama film focuses on four families as they each celebrate Thanksgiving in a different way. Estelle Harris, in fine form as always, plays the character of Bea, one of an elderly Jewish couple that joins one of the families for Thanksgiving dinner. One of the funniest scenes in the entire film occurs as Bea questions a lesbian character about her romantic prospects, unaware of the fact that she is gay. As she always does in these sorts of moments, Estelle Harris manages to own the entire scene with her whip-smart humor.

6 Movin’ In (2010), 7.0

This film, released in 2010, is about a young man from Switzerland who moves to Los Angeles in order to meet the woman who has been his pen pal. Things don’t go entirely as planned when the pen pal turns out to be a fraud and he reconnects with an old friend of his. All sorts of hijinks ensue. The film is a fairly funny one, and it was entered in the 2010 New York City International Film Festival. Estelle Harris plays a fairly minor role in the film as a character named Arlene, but as always she is simply a delight any time that she appears on the screen.

5 Dave The Barbarian, (2004), 7.0

This rather whimsical and light-hearted series is about a man named Dave who goes on a variety of Middle Ages-type adventures with his family. In this series, Estelle Harris lends her voice to Lula, Dave’s enchanted sword who is often very loud and shrill. Unsurprisingly, she constantly gives Dave a hard time, even though it’s also clear that there’s a lot of affection between the two of them and that she’ll have his back in a pinch. Lula is but one among many other enchanted objects, all of which are members of her extended family.

4 Toy Story 4 (2019), 7.8

This film, the most recent (and possibly last) entry in the very popular Toy Story series from Pixar, once again features Estelle Harris in the role of Mrs. Potato Head. In this film, she has a smaller role than she had in the other films, in part because so many of the toys are not part of the main narrative.

However, as is always the case with Estelle Harris, the moments when she appears in the film are always a pleasure, and she works that strange magic with her voice that is all her own.

3 Toy Story 2 (1999), 7.9

This is actually the first of the Toy Story films in which Estelle Harris actually appears as the Mrs. Potato Head character (she had previously been referred to but not seen). This is actually a bit of a change of form for Harris, as Mrs. Potato Head is not what you would expect from the woman who played Estelle Costanza. Instead, she is a very gregarious and affectionate wife to Mr. Potato Head (she frequently tells him how much she likes him), and there is an undeniable amount of chemistry between Harris and Don Rickles.

2 Toy Story 3 (2010), 8.3

Given how compelling she was in the second Toy Story film, it’s no wonder that they brought her back for an expanded role in the third film. In it, Mrs. Potato Head plays a key role early in the film in establishing that Woody is telling the truth about Andy (something that the toys had refused to believe before). She is subsequently separated from Mr. Potato Head, though they are finally reunited at the end of the film. She, along with the other toys, passes into the custody of Bonnie.

1 Seinfeld (1989), 8.3

Seinfeld is, without question, one of the most important and influential television series of the last thirty years. A key part of its success was not only its primary cast but also the numerous supporting characters who appeared, and perhaps no character made such an impression as Estelle Costanza, the overbearing mother of the spastic George. With the way that she treats George and her husband, is it any wonder that they both turned out the way that they did? Despite her abrasive personality, it’s impossible not to love Estelle.
