Eternals director Chloé Zhao explains how the film will have a huge impact on the future of the MCU. The latest cinematic entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe just had its worldwide premiere in Los Angeles on October 18, which means that its wide release on November 5 is fast approaching. After the premiere, early reactions to Eternals began to surface on social media, many of them deeming it the most epic and emotional movie Marvel has ever produced, replete with new MCU mythology.

One of the most anticipated aspects of Eternals is the visionary writer/director behind the film, Chloé Zhao. Since wrapping principal photography on the MCU film over a year ago, Zhao took home numerous Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture, for her previous film, Nomadland, which only intensified anticipation for Eternals. Similar to James Gunn with Guardians of the Galaxy, Zhao has been entrusted with introducing an all-new lineup of superheroes to the MCU not previously known in the mainstream. The titular team is headlined by A-listers like Angelina Jolie as Thena and Salma Hayek as Ajak, along with other familiar faces like Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Gemma Chan.

Now, in an interview with Screen Rant, Chloé Zhao was asked about the effect that Eternals will have on the MCU moving forward. Though she couldn’t get too specific, Zhao did say the film will define the origins of the MCU by “exploring the mythology of the Celestials,” which is “going to have repercussions for the future.” Read how Zhao describes the impact Eternals will have on the MCU’s future below:

Huge, huge. I can’t say anything! I can’t say anything, but one thing I can say is that we knew going in that the origin of the MCU will be defined to a certain extent in this film by exploring the mythology of the Celestials, and we know this is going to have repercussions for the future.

When those two things are locked in, we get to really make a standalone movie and to play within that. And that’s what Jack Kirby has intended when he first created the comics: he created a group of heroes and a world very much separate from, at that time, the really popular heroes that exist in the mainstream.

While many initially assumed Eternals would be more of a standalone piece separate from the MCU’s main storyline, there have been many indications it will have major implications moving forward. There are a plethora of ways Eternals could impact the MCU, but Zhao seems to be referring specifically to the role the Celestials will play. The space gods have graced the screen before (Eson the Searcher in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), though Eternals will now explore the history behind the powerful cosmic beings who created the titular race.

The fact Eternals will also explore the creation of the MCU itself should be an intriguing prospect for fans. The alien race has been living on Earth for thousands of years, which gives Zhao the chance to not only revisit events from past MCU movies and recontextualize them, but from the history of humankind. With Eternals set to introduce their cosmic creators and explore their origins, the Celestials could be primed for a more prominent role in the MCU’s future.
