Eternals Domestic Box Office Debut Lowest For Marvel Since 2015s AntMan

Eternals opened at around $71 million this weekend, making it Marvel’s lowest domestic box office debut since 2015’s Ant-Man. From Academy Award-winning director ChloĆ© Zhao, Eternals tells the story of a group of immortal aliens known as Eternals, who have been hiding on Earth for thousands of years. When an evil force known as Deviants threatens the existence of the planet, the Eternals must come out of hiding and band together to defeat them.

The film features a stacked cast with Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, and Lia McHugh as the central heroes. Eternals also marks the lowest ever score on Rotten Tomatoes for a Marvel film, currently sitting at 48%, beating the previous low-record holder Thor: The Dark World. The film has stirred up controversy in several countries for its depiction of LGBTQ+ relationships and will thus not release in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Due to previous comments made by Zhao regarding her upbringing in China, there are currently no plans for the film to be released there either.

According to a new article from Deadline, Eternals is set to pull in record low (at least for Marvel) opening weekend box office numbers second only to 2015’s Ant-Man. The Paul Rudd-led film opened with $57.2 million domestically, while Eternals is currently sitting at around $71 million. Many experts predicted an opening weekend for the film upwards of $80 million, similar to Doctor Strange’s $85 million opening in 2016. Most recently, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opened to just over $75 million domestically in its first three days, coming close to $95 million in total during its four-day Labor Day weekend debut.

While, by Marvel standards, the box office numbers for Eternals are low, the film has still performed well by other metrics. The film’s global box office numbers are currently around $162 million, making it the second-best opening for a film in 2021 behind F9’s $163 million. For context, Shang-Chi’s global opening weekend pull came in at around $128 million. Although Eternals’ poor word of mouth and negative critical reception are likely part of the reason why the film hasn’t performed as well as most of Marvel’s other movies, the fact that it’s not releasing in China has likely impacted box office numbers as well. For example, out of F9’s $163 million opening weekend global box office revenue, $136 million of that came from China.

Ultimately, although Eternals numbers look low by comparison to other Marvel movies, the film has performed adequately and is unlikely to impact Marvel’s bottom line in any meaningful way. What seems more likely to live on in memory than the film’s box office numbers are the film’s many negative reviews and its position as the lowest-rated Marvel movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes. Generally, however, it seems like audiences’ opinions of Eternals are more positive than the critical reception. In the grand scheme of things, Eternals is among several recently released films to reinvigorate public interest in going to the movies.
