Ethan Hawke’s Purge TV Show Return & Movie Connection Explained

The Purge television series brought back a familiar face to the franchise with Ethan Hawke briefly reprising his role as James Sandin from the first film in a flashback.

In the events of The Purge (2013), James Sandin perished after his family’s home was invaded by Purgers, including some of their own neighbors. Sandin sold high-level, expensive home security systems that would supposedly keep people safe from those who wished to Purge and exercise their legal right to murder, as granted by the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA). The irony of his own system failing him was compelling, especially since he sold the same systems to many other families in his idyllic, suburban neighborhood, where one might expect such measures wouldn’t even be necessary. However, as was proven in the events of the first film, The Purge is celebrated and embraced by many, even those who might initially seem unlikely to commit cold-blooded murder.

When news of Hawke’s return was announced, many speculated as to how James Sandin might play a role in the series, as he clearly perished in the first film. However, the series explores multiple timelines and seasons one and two are majorly separate from one another. The overall timeline is vague enough that finding a way to include a familiar face wasn’t wholly out of the realm of possibility, especially since the franchise’s timeline is rather complex.

Ethan Hawke’s The Purge TV Series Cameo Explained

Hawke’s role is minor, as he appears for a brief scene in a cameo during the finale’s cold open that is determined to be a flashback. In the flashback, Sandin was contacted by one of his clients for whom he installed a high-tech security system one week before the first government-sanctioned national Purge. Side commentary from a security official and Sandin’s partner suggested some people still thought The Purge was a publicity stunt, and not something that would actually happen. Sandin’s business partner called him to assist with troubleshooting over a dysfunctional key card, which led to an encrypted entryway overseeing a broadcast room, which the client stated was their primary way of communicating with the general public during The Purge. The broadcast room came into play later in the episode, during a future timeline.

Hawke’s role, though brief, was important not only for the episode on the whole, as the broadcast room itself became a major plot device toward the ending of the season, but also gave a bit of foreshadowing in an ironic fashion as to Sandin’s eventual fate. In the flashback, Sandin assisted with the troubleshooting and reassured his client as to the safety of his security systems, stating that it’s the same he uses in his own home to protect his family. Fans of the franchise know that, as this was a primary failure in the events of The Purge, the security systems are not all that safe, and can be overtaken with relative ease.
