WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Euphoria Season 2 finale, “All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name,” now streaming on HBO Max.

In Season 2 of Euphoria, fans were eager to see how Cassie and Maddy would end their rivalry after the former slept with Nate. Everyone knew Maddy was waiting for the right opportunity to beat Cassie down in revenge, and it finally came in the auditorium with Lexi’s play causing mass chaos.

However, whilst the conflict they had finished in an annoying manner, it was perfect for one of the teens, who knew full well that karma would be coming for the other. And by doing so, it painted a dark road ahead, especially knowing the kind of violent monster Nate could be.

Cassie stormed the stage as Lexi’s play called out her superficial ways. However, while Cassie tried to attack her sister, Maddy ran up and began chasing Cassie down. She couldn’t stand how her best friend slept with her beau all this time, and it led to her pulling Cassie’s hair, scratching and even slamming Cassie’s face into the wall.

It was disturbing, dramatic but comedic at the same time, giving the TV show a slapstick Looney Tunes feel to Maddy’s pursuit. Interestingly, Maddy held back on “killing” Cassie, not just because there were so many friends and family around, but because deep down, it wasn’t worth it.

She’d never backstab Cassie like this and honestly, as wild as Maddy got, she’d never encourage one of the girls’ boyfriends to cheat. It’s not in her code, which shocked fans to see how mature Maddy suddenly became when it came to Nate’s infidelity. But her truce did come from a selfish place, because while her burying the hatchet in the bathroom was underwhelming after weeks of build-up, Maddy played the ultimate trump card. She told Cassie it’s “only just getting started,” which meant Cassie would now suffer the same way she did with Nate’s toxicity. Cassie has already gotten a taste, being used for sex and then emotionally abandoned, so she immediately began freezing up.

She remembered all of Maddy’s secrets and complaints about Nate being aggressive, to the point even his own mom admitted he could be a monster like his predator father, Cal. Cassie was left panicking, with Maddy’s subtle, genuine words feeling like a twisted punishment.

Maddy can tell Cassie will be put through the wringer, so she’s just glad the burden’s off her. Ironically, Nate got Cal locked up so he may have put his demons and anger issues to bed, but if history is to repeat itself, he’ll feel guilty and relapse soon enough in Season 3. But luckily for Maddy, she won’t have to deal with the gaslighting and abuse anymore, happily leaving Cassie with the object of her affection and a prize Cassie knows she can never refuse in Nate.

To see how this love triangle is settled, watch the Season 2 finale of Euphoria on HBO Max.
