Stranger Things Season 4 Will Have Character Age Gaps but Fans Dont Care

Science fiction fans have been obsessed with Stranger Things since Will Byers disappeared from Hawkins, Indiana and ended up in a shadow realm called the Upside Down. The series has expanded to unimaginable heights in the years since. That means viewers have also watched the series’ incredibly talented cast grow up. Leading into Season 4, that’s created a scary situation that has nothing to do with the new villain about to be unleashed.

The wait between Season 3 and Season 4 of the Netflix series has been about three years. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the large scale of Season 4, production on the upcoming season took nearly twice as long. Unfortunately, that also created age gaps, as the show’s actors no longer match the ages of their characters. But how much will that actually matter to the show’s excited fan base?

Stranger Things Season 4 Will Have Character Age Gaps but Fans Dont Care

The first three seasons of Stranger Things took an average of a year and a half in production. To match that, each season jumped ahead almost a year, which made each character’s aging look natural. However, because of the delays in Season 4’s production, things don’t match up anymore. The almost three-year break wasn’t accounted for in the writing — because no one foresaw a global pandemic — and the new season is set just six months after the end of Season 3.

The problem is actually worse than continuity. Because of the drawn-out nature of Season 4’s production, there are instances in the new episodes where the cast looks older or younger from scene to scene. That’s a big deal — and in a recent interview with TODAY, stars Gaten Matarazzo and Noah Schnapp addressed the age gap concerns.

Matarazzo: It’s something we’re always thinking about and concerned about, but it’s something we work with pretty well, I think.

Schnapp: I remember in season two they told me you need to lower the pitch of your voice. You have to speak at a different level and stand shorter. I was like, ‘I can’t do that, I’m not like that anymore.’

Matarazzo: The characters are at transitional periods in their lives, so it makes sense. It is crazy to see what all of us looked like when we first started.

So the age gap issue is something that both the Strange Things cast and the Duffer brothers have thought about. However, there’s only so much that anyone can do. The young actors aren’t kids anymore; they vary in age from 17-20. The real question is how much viewers will mind the discrepancy, especially if it varies frequently — and it likely won’t matter much at all. Fans may be slightly distracted, but that’s likely to be overshadowed by the anticipation for Season 4 and how much bigger it is.

Season 4’s budget and scale are both much larger than the show has ever been before, while the episode lengths are nearly doubled. The cast’s aging also led to more mature and scarier storylines that will hold viewers’ attention. Additionally, the characters looking older also helps the story along in a metaphorical way — they may not be much older physically, but with everything they have experienced, they are definitely more mature than their actual ages. The age gaps will give a visual ethos to their characters’ progression and could end up being more of a help to the series than a hindrance.
