Even The Joker Knows NIGHTWING Fans Hate Ric Grayson

The Joker is obsessed with all things Batman-related, and wants it on the record: he’s not happy with ‘Ric’ Grayson allowing his Nightwing persona to wither away. While some comic fans may clamor for traditional Dick’s return, depending on the Joker for help in that arena… is probably a mistake.

The infamous ‘Ric Grayson’ manifested after Nightwing was shot by the KGBeast while on patrol with Batman as Nightwing. After waking from a medically induced coma, he returned to Blüdhaven, became a taxi driver and began referring to himself as ‘Ric.’ Barbara Gordon reached out to him, but with severe memory loss and no recollection of his past fighting alongside the Dark Knight, Ric rejected his past life and attempted to destroy his time as Nightwing. However, a handful of police and a firefighter stumbled upon one of Dick’s bunkers and became the new Nightwing, attempting to fill the void left absent by the hero. Ric tried to embrace his new life and attempted to ignore his vigilante instincts but was quite unsuccessful and found himself working alongside the Nightwings. All while juggling conflicting memories of his past life.

The existence of false-Nightwings doesn’t sit well with the Joker, who can’t let Dick Grayson stay Ric Grayson under his sociopathic watch. The Joker arrives in Blüdhaven after Ric has overcome the Court of Owls’ attempts to further manipulate his memories and enlist Grayson as a Talon assassin. The clown maniac dispatches the understudies and in Nightwing #71 appears in the bar owned by Ric’s love interest Bea Bennet, with a crowbar in hand and crudely wearing the remnants of a Nightwing costume. Ric shows up in time to stop Bea from suffering the worst of Joker’s presence but doesn’t stop the villain from coming into possession of the crystal the Court of Owls used to toy with the former sidekick’s memories. Activating the crystal, Joker makes his dislike of the name Ric known, and influences Dick to assume the name “Dicky Boy” as he begins to rewrite Grayson’s memory once more.

Batman’s most well-known protégé has had a rocky path in recent years. The Court of Owls’ resurgence in Gotham lead to Dick learning of his troubling familial ties and connections to the secret organization. Later, Dick Grayson’s identity as Nightwing was exposed. After having his heart stopped, he allowed the world to believe he was dead for a period, and went undercover as a secret agent in the pages of Grayson. The latest memory issues caused by brain trauma have only been compounded by the Court of Owls’ manipulations, and it would appear the Joker has his own plans for the former Robin, sure to become a factor in the upcoming Joker War.

For some fans of Nightwing, seeing their beloved hero straying so far from the Dick Grayson they know and love has not been easy. But a part of Dick’s story post-Robin has always been about searching for who he is beyond the shadow of Batman and Bruce Wayne. It was that longing for an identity that he felt comfortable with that inspired the birth of Nightwing in the first place. While what’s ahead is a mystery, the Dick Grayson faithful fans know: the circus trapeze artist at heart always catches himself before he falls too far.
