Even the Sith Should Fear Darth Mauls Crimson Dawn

This article contains spoilers for Doctor Aphra #15.

The Star Wars comics have proved even the Sith should be afraid of Darth Maul’s Crimson Dawn. Solo: A Star Wars Story introduced viewers to a new criminal empire, one that rivaled the previously-established Hutt syndicates and Black Sun. Crimson Dawn was a ruthless criminal enterprise, one of the most dangerous in the galaxy, currying the Empire’s favor – and thus targeted by a proto-Rebellion. A shocking twist revealed that Crimson Dawn had been founded by Darth Maul himself, presumably in order to allow his agents to get close enough to the Empire to destroy it.

Crimson Dawn was founded in the Dark Times before the Galactic Civil War, and it seems to have mysteriously declined. But Marvel Comics’ “War of the Bounty Hunters” event has seen them resurface, no longer under the leadership of Darth Maul – who died shortly before the original trilogy, as seen in Star Wars: Rebels – but under Han’s ex, Lady Qi’ra. Qi’ra appears to be continuing Darth Maul’s mission to transform Crimson Dawn into a force that can challenge the Empire. The story of Crimson Dawn will continue in an upcoming “Crimson Empire” event, with Qi’ra likely to make extensive use of the network of agents she has been revealed to have planted throughout the Empire.

Doctor Aphra #15, by Alyssa Wong and Minkyu Jung, proves the Empire should be deeply concerned about the secret empire of Crimson Dawn. It seems Lady Qi’ra has spent quite some time collecting artifacts that could potentially be used against the Sith – including ones even the Sith feared. When Doctor Aphra breaks into Crimson Dawn’s vaults, she discovers a legendary Thought Dowser, a relic that belonged to an ancient Force cult known as the Ascendant. This device allowed anyone – even a non-Force-sensitive – to control the minds of those around them. Someone who is strong in the Force would find it crushingly effective. Apparently, the ancient Sith briefly used them for training, but ultimately discontinued using the Thought Dowsers because they considered them too dangerous.

Mentored by Darth Maul himself, Lady Qi’ra is well aware Darth Vader is a Sith and is probably one of the few in the galaxy to be aware Palpatine is a Sith Lord, too. She has clearly spent substantial time researching the Force – discovering secrets the Sith would rather she forgot – and obtaining relics such as the Dowser, which even the Emperor may not be aware of, given he doesn’t discuss them in his notes on the dark side compiled in the in-universe book Secrets of the Sith. The Empire has no idea just how dangerous a threat Crimson Dawn could be.

And it seems the time has come for Crimson Dawn to make their move. “War of the Bounty Hunters” has come to a close, setting up the “Crimson Empire” event and seeing Qi’ra ally with the Knights of Ren – and, given the Knights of Ren potentially include an ex-Jedi, they too may pose a real challenge for the Empire. Crimson Dawn is becoming a major player in galactic events, and – as Star Wars comics are proving – even the Empire should fear them.
