Every Avatar Actor Who Returned In Legend Of Korra (And Who They Played)

Several voice actors from The Last Airbender returned for Legend Of Korra, with roles including brief cameos and original characters’ descendants.

There is a massive overlap between the creative teams behind Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra: The original show’s creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, returned as executive producers for the sequel series; Joaquim Dos Santos returned as a director; and, several writers from The Last Airbender, including Tim Hedrick, Joshua Hamilton, and Katie Mattila, came back to write for The Legend Of Korra. With all this overlap behind the scenes, it stands to reason that some of the voice acting talent responsible for bringing the characters of the Avatar universe to life would return for the sequel series as well.

Legend Of Korra continues the Avatar cycle established in The Last Airbender. Taking place 70 years after the events of the original series, Legend Of Korra follows a new cast of characters, including the new Avatar, Korra, through Republic City and beyond. Several characters from The Last Airbender return briefly, but the series is carried by Korra and her newly introduced allies.

Just because these old characters don’t get much screen time doesn’t mean their voice actors are relegated to the same fate. Viewers may recognize familiar voices appearing throughout The Legend Of Korra in unexpected places. These are the eight actors from The Last Airbender who returned for The Legend Of Korra, including some fan favorites and surprising cameos.

Dante Basco – Prince Zuko/General Iroh

Dante Basco won over viewers’ hearts as Zuko, the banished Prince of the Fire Nation. Zuko’s redemption is one of the greatest narrative arcs in either Avatar series: his oscillation between right and wrong as he tries to regain his honor is a masterclass in storytelling. Basco humanizes Zuko and elevates his inner struggle, making him one of the most sympathetic characters in The Last Airbender. In The Legend Of Korra, Basco returns as Iroh, General of the United Forces as well as Zuko’s grandson. Playing General Iroh gives Basco the perfect opportunity to continue Zuko’s legacy, and Iroh’s alliance with Korra adds to the sentiment that friendships can transcend lifetimes introduced in The Last Airbender.

Grey DeLisle-Griffin – Princess Azula/Ming-Hua

Grey DeLisle-Griffin’s performance as Princess Azula in The Last Airbender is iconic: she is vicious and relentless, a cold and calculating mastermind. Despite Azula’s villainy, DeLisle-Griffin still manages to make her sympathetic. Her spiral into madness during the finale is heartbreaking and one of the most memorable moments of a stellar episode. It’s only fitting that Grey DeLisle-Griffin makes her return to the Avatar universe as a villain. She voices Ming-Hua, a deadly waterbending member of the Red Lotus. Like Azula, Ming-Hua is relentless and a firm believer in her cause. Ming-Hua isn’t the only character DeLisle-Griffin voices in The Legend Of Korra, though — she also appears as various spirits in season 2 and Young Lin Beifong in season 3.

Jessie Flower – Toph Beifong/Young Suyin Beifong

Like Dante Basco, Jessie Flower continued her original character, Toph Beifong’s, legacy in The Legend Of Korra by playing a member of her family. Flower voices two members of the Beifong clan: Toph, Aang’s earthbending teacher and the greatest earthbender of all time, and Suyin, Toph’s youngest daughter. Both Toph and Suyin have a bit of a rebellious side. Toph runs away from her restrictive parents to teach Aang, and, when she has children of her own, she gives them more freedom. Meanwhile, Suyin hangs out with members of the Terra Triad and helps them with a robbery. Suyin later grows up to be the mature matriarch of the Metal Clan, but Flower helps lay the groundwork of her personality while also paying tribute to her original role.

Dee Bradley Baker – Appa/Momo/Tarrlok/Naga/Pabu

Dee Bradley Baker can do it all. Not only does he voices every animal in the Avatar universe, including lovable air bison Appa and flying lemur Momo, he also lends his voice to several human characters. Most notable among these is councilman Tarrlok, the slimy representative from the Northern Water Tribe who has his own agenda for taking down Amon and ruling Republic City. Baker is also the voice behind Chong, one of the traveling nomads from season 2, episode 2 of The Last Airbender: “The Cave Of Two Lovers.” As Chong, he sings the timeless classic “Secret Tunnel,” a complete departure from his later villainous work as Tarrlok.

Daniel Dae Kim – General Fong/Hiroshi Sato

Daniel Dae Kim may have played a relatively small part in The Last Airbender, but his role in The Legend Of Korra is much more substantive. In his first appearance in the Avatar universe, Kim voiced General Fong, a character who only appears in season 2, episode 1, “The Avatar State.” Fong pushes Aang to dangerous lengths so he can control the Avatar State, even threatening to hurt Katara. While he is only in one episode, he sets up Aang’s arc of trying to master the Avatar State. Unlike Fong, Hiroshi Sato appears throughout The Legend Of Korra, in seasons 1 and 4. As a villainous inventor and father to Asami Sato, Hiroshi is an interesting secondary antagonist and responsible for much of the industrial progress seen in the series.

Clancy Brown – Long Feng/Yakone

Similarly to Grey DeLisle-Griffin, both of Clancy Brown’s characters in the Avatar universe are villains. Long Feng is the leader of the Dai Li, the police force of Ba Sing Se who maintain peace by sinister means, and one of the main antagonists of season 2. As Long Feng, Brown is menacing and conniving, and he poses a real threat to Aang and the rest of his team. Brown voices yet another threat to Aang in The Legend Of Korra, playing Yakone. Yakone is a powerful bloodbender, one of a few in either series. He terrorized Republic City with his power to bloodbend every day, not just during the full moon, but his bending was removed by Aang. This sets in motion the events of The Legend Of Korra’s first season, making him an incredibly important villain.

James Sie – Cabbage Merchant/Lau Gan-Lan

Who would have thought a cabbage merchant mourning the destruction of his cabbages would be one of the most iconic things to come out of The Last Airbender? This running gag spanned all three seasons of the original series and was even referenced in the first season of The Legend Of Korra. As the Cabbage Merchant, James Sie may not have many lines, but he most definitely leaves an impact as a beloved side character. He returns in Legend Of Korra as the voice of Lau Gan-Lan, the Cabbage Merchant’s son and owner of Cabbage Corp, a rival of Hiroshi Sato’s Future Industries. Just like Dante Basco and Jessie Flower, Sie carries on his original character’s legacy by playing one of his family members. It’s only a brief cameo, but it’s one that fans of both series enjoy.

Serena Williams – Ming/Fire Sage

Blink and viewers will easily miss tennis legend Serena Williams’s cameos in both The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra. Williams has always been a fan of the shows, even taking to Twitter to ask fans about the origins of bending, and her fandom paid off in two appearances. In The Last Airbender, Williams plays Ming, Uncle Iroh’s kindest prison guard. In The Legend Of Korra, she voices one of the fire sages who save Korra in season 2. While both are small roles, it’s fun to see how Williams was excited to return to the Avatar universe, along with all of the previously mentioned, highly talented actors.
