Ever since Carrie in 1976, many of Stephen King’s works have been adapted for both the small and the large screens. As King’s books are often better than the screen adaptations, there have been a fair few disappointments over the years, although there have been a number of excellent adaptations too, with IT, Salem’s Lot, and Doctor Sleep standing among them.

The Stephen King wagon train keeps on rolling, and many more adaptations are planned. Some are so far unconfirmed and the basis of rumor, but the following are those that have been officially confirmed.

10 The Stand

The 1994 miniseries was one of the best TV adaptations of King’s work and, as announced at The Wrap, the author’s epic piece of apocalyptic fiction is about to get another television airing. The series will air on CBS Access at the tail end of December and will continue into 2021.

Josh Boone is directing the new adaptation, and James Marsden, Amber Heard, and Alexander Skarsgard (as the series’ big bad, Randall Flagg) will be starring. In a year when the real world has been beset by a virus of life-changing proportions, the miniseries will be quite timely, telling as it does a tale of a future earth ravaged by a weaponized version of the influenza virus.

9 Children Of The Corn

There have been a number of horror movies with creepy kids at the fore, and the 1984 adaptation of King’s short story stands among them. Unfortunately, the movie was one of the worst Stephen King adaptations, and the subsequent sequels and 2009 televised remake didn’t fare too well either. Still, “he who walks behind the rows” is set to walk again in 2021, and Deadline has confirmed it has now finished shooting.

The movie is directed by Kurt Wimmer, the visionary director of Equilibrium, and the cast includes Elena Kampouris, Stephen Hunter, and Bruce Spence. It will serve as a prequel to the author’s work, telling the story of a young girl who recruits a bunch of schoolchildren into her adult-butchering cult.

8 Lisey’s Story

Stephen King is adapting his own 2006 novel for Apple’s streaming service, and it is due to air sometime in 2021. The Pablo Larrain-directed series will star Julianne Moore as Lisey, a distraught widow who is forced to fight back against an obsessive fan of her late husband. Secrets are promised, with as yet untold truths about her late husband, and according to the author, it will be a very personal tale.

It won’t be the first time we have had a story about obsessive fans, of course. The 1990 movie Misery successfully brought the character of ‘number one fan’ Annie Wilkes to the screen, so here’s hoping that the latest King adaptation will be as good.

7 Revival

Stephen King’s 2014 novel has been in the works for a number of years now, quite ironically, as directors have come and gone when trying to revive it for the big screen. Thankfully, as announced by Variety, Mike Flanagan, (no stranger to King’s work after Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep) has taken over the reins of the new movie, and a release date of late 2021/early 2022 is expected.

The novel is a dark and disturbing work about a minister conducting experiments into the afterlife after the death of his wife. Needless to say, his attempts to find out what exists beyond the realms of human existence does not end well, with bleak consequences for him and everybody he comes into contact with. If the upcoming movie is as good as the book, it could well be another Mike Flanagan masterpiece.

6 Firestarter

Blumhouse is behind this new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 novel and while it is not known who will be playing young psychic Charlie, Variety has revealed Zac Efron will be in the movie. The story of a young girl with pyrokinetic powers originally lit up the screen in 1984, with Drew Barrymore in the lead role, but it failed to ignite a lot of interest from both critics and movie audiences.

Keith Thomas, the director of the acclaimed horror movie, The Vigil, is at the helm of the remake, so it should be a better movie than the original. Stephen King seems to have a thing about characters with psychic powers, as both Carrie and The Shining share similar themes. If this movie is as good as those two pieces of horror cinema, it should set the screen alight sometime in 2021.

5 The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

Deadline has confirmed that Scottish director Lynne Ramsay will be directing the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s 1999 psychological horror novel, and shooting will start in 2021. Casting hasn’t been announced yet, but if you’re a fan, you can expect to hear more very soon.

The story focuses on a young 12-year girl, Trisha McFarland, who gets lost in the woods after becoming separated from her family. Her only comfort is her portable radio and the baseball games she listens to for mention of her idol, Red Sox pitcher, Tom Gordon. She starts to hallucinate him saving her, but in reality, there is something very dark and real stalking her through the dark woods. Is it the big bad wolf? You will find no spoilers here!

4 The Talisman

Steven Spielberg will be producing this adaption of the fantasy epic King co-authored with fellow horror novelist Peter Straub, and Collider has reported that Mike Barker is in line to direct the movie. As one of King’s most beloved works, fans have been clamoring for an adaptation for a long time. It has been in and out of the development stage for years, but it looks as though the movie will finally be happening.

The novel tells the tale of Jack Sawyer, a 12-year old boy who goes in search of a mystical talisman in an alternate world that is similar to our own. It is a classic good-against-evil story, and for many, is one of King’s better works of fiction. If the movie is as good as the novel, this could be outstanding. The release date is so far unconfirmed.

3 Chapelwaite

Salem’s Lot was one of the best Stephen King miniseries, and a reboot of the author’s classic work of vampire fiction is reportedly in the works. Little is known about it at this stage, although a prequel series is on the way. Chapelwaite is based on a short story King wrote setting up the events of his sharp-toothed novel and is set in the same town as that earlier work. Check out Dread Central’s first look at the series.

Adrian Brody and Schitt’s Creek’s Emily Hampshire will star, and it is set in the 1850s. It will follow Captain Charles Boone (Brody) and his family after they relocate to the sleepy Maine town, and will delve into the dark secrets they discover about their own family history. No prizes for guessing vampires will be involved somewhere, but all will be revealed when the series is released in 2021.

2 The Dark Half

George A. Romero unsuccessfully adapted King’s creepy 1989 novel in 1993, so here’s hoping the new movie will be better. Variety has reported that Her Smell director Alex Ross Perry will be at the helm, and the movie is currently in the development stage, with no confirmed release date at present.

Stephen King famously penned a number of novels under the pseudonym, Richard Bachman, and The Dark Half shares similarities. In the book, author Thad Beaumont creates a new pen name in an effort to find new audiences for his work, but his alter ego, George Stark, seemingly comes to life. Many of King’s works have played on themes from his own life, but here’s hoping the tale of the murderous Stark is far-removed from King’s alternative literary identity.

1 From A Buick 8

There have been a number of Stephen King adaptations featuring killer cars, with Christine and Maximum Overdrive being among them. Empire has revealed another, with Cold In July director Jim Mickle in the driver’s seat and Thomas Jane starring and producing.

The story is centered around a Buick 8, which has more than an engine under its hood. Supernatural powers lie within the car that mysteriously takes up residence at a Pennsylvania police station, with horrifying consequences for anybody who dares to take a peek at the darkness inside. Release date unconfirmed.
