Every Freddy Krueger Appearance on The Simpsons

Surprisingly enough, A Nightmare on Elm Street villain Freddy Krueger has made several appearances in the animated world of The Simpsons. Freddy, played by Robert Englund in eight Elm Street films, is one of horror’s biggest icons, to the point that many fans still hope that the now 72-year-old Englund will once again reprise the role for one last sequel. With or without Englund though, the estate of late Nightmare on Elm Street creator Wes Craven is known to be taking pitches for a new entry into the storied franchise.

The Simpsons, meanwhile, is currently airing season 31, with season 32 on the way. It remains to be seen if Disney – who bought Fox’s movie and TV assets in 2019 – will opt to keep the venerable animated sitcom on the air after that. One factor working in the favor of more Simpsons getting made is that each new episode just adds more valuable material to the selection of TV programs available on the Disney+ streaming service.

While Freddy might at first seem an odd character to have guest starred on The Simpsons, it’s not as wild at it seems, due to the series’ longstanding association with horror. This is mostly thanks to the annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween specials, which stretch all the way back to 1990. Freddy Krueger has appeared no less than four times on The Simpsons, and here’s a full rundown.

Freddy’s first appearance on The Simpsons came during “Treehouse of Horror V,” aired on October 30, 1994. During the fan-favorite segment “The Shinning” – a parody of The Shining in which a lack of TV and beer drives Homer insane – Homer is locked inside a food storage room by Marge. Not wanting to leave the food, Homer has to be dragged out by Moe and a group of horror icons in order to get back to his mission of murder. One of these villains is Freddy, although Jason Voorhees, Dracula, Pinhead, The Mummy, and The Wolfman also participate.

While Freddy Krueger doesn’t technically appear as himself in “Treehouse of Horror VI,” aired on October 29, 1995, an entire segment called “Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace” is dedicated to parodying Freddy and the Nightmare on Elm Street films. In the segment, Groundskeeper Willie is accidentally burned to death thanks to Homer’s idiocy, and returns as a knockoff of Freddy – complete with cheesy one-liners – that proceeds to menace Springfield’s children in their dreams.

Freddy’s next proper Simpsons appearance came during the couch gag of “Treehouse of Horror IX,” aired on October 25, 1998. After the entire Simpsons family is killed during the opening credits, Freddy and Jason are seen sitting on their couch. Freddy questions where the Simpsons are, and Jason – in an odd bit, since Jason doesn’t talk in the movies – dismisses Freddy’s concern. Amusingly, Robert Englund was actually brought in to voice this single line appearance. Finally, Freddy is one of the many pop culture icons and celebrities that sing the anti-Springfield anthem Springfield Blows in the season 17 episode “Million-Dollar Abie”.
